Jones and Goldie Gladys Carrel, was born August 17, 1918 in Doyle Township, Clarke County, Iowa. He passed from this life November 8, 2008 at his home in Osceola at 90 years of age. Dale attended rural school at Doyle No. 6, graduated from Grand River High School in May of 1936, attended a summer session at Simpson College in Indianola, and then taught the Doyle No. 6 School the following year. In the early summer of 1937, Dale went to Simpson, Kansas and worked for his Uncle, Frank Jones on the family's farms. That fall he enrolled in the Engineering School at Kansas State College in Manhattan, Kansas. He pursued Engineering studies for two and a half years and in November 1939 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps Flying Cadet Program and went into the military service at the end of the semester. In October of 1940, he graduated from the Advanced Pilot Flying School at Kelly Field, San Antonio, TX and was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the reserve with a rating of Airplane Pilot. He went on active duty with the start of World War II on December 7, 1941 and was sent immediately to the Panama Canal Zone where he was a member of the 6th Air Force, flying reconnaissance and submarine patrol over the Caribbean Sea. He returned to the United States in 1943 where as a member of the 3rd Air Force he was involved in the training of airplane crews and ground force troops. In 1945, he was appointed commanding officer of Marshall Field Air Force base near Junction City, Kansas Dale was married August 11, 1945, in Alexandria, LA, to Dorothy Sarah Hunt of Indianola, Iowa. In October, he was released from active duty in the Air Force and the couple came back to Iowa where they purchased a grocery store and frozen food locker in Menlo, Iowa. Eventually Dot's parents, Ralph and Hazel Hunt went into the business with them. Dale and Dot became the parents of four children: Cindy, Gary, Maria, and Robert. After operating the business for 12 years, Dale and Dot moved to a farm in Doyle Township near his father's farm where they were involved in raising livestock as well as grain crops for 27 years before retiring and moving to Osceola in 1985. Dale had a strong love for the soil and for the animals that were a part of his farming venture. Dale served for many years as the clerk of Doyle Township, including holding the elections for the township in Hopeville. After moving to Osceola he served on the 1st Ward election board for several years. He was in his retirement years an avid golfer as well as maintaining a large vegetable garden on the land on which he was born. In addition to these hobbies, Dale enjoyed fishing in the Grand River and in neighboring farm ponds as long as he could physically navigate the steep banks. One of his pleasures was in teaching the grandkids how to fish. Also in his retirement years he spent many hours at the computer writing of the early years of his life, including the almost six years he spent in the military service of his country. He retired with the rank of Major and carried a strong recall (memory of his service) into his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eugene who was killed in WWII; brother Jim Jones; brothers-in-law, E.B. Jimerson, Charles Black, Ivel Miller, Jim Radford, and Al Ogbourne. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Dorothy (Dot) Jones of Osceola; children, Cynthia Louise Lite & husband Alan of Yardley, PA; Gary Eugene Jones & wife Cathy of Osceola; Maria Linda Balbo & husband Peter of Litchfield, MN; Robert David Jones and fiancé, Kris Hagen of New Virginia; grandchildren, Scott Jones, Eric Jones, Melanie Matthews, Steve Lite, Jessica Balbo, Alysha Balbo, Samantha Jones-Gaiser; great grandchildren, Austin, Tyler & Kylee Jones; Jordan Jones; Jaidon & Sophina Matthews, Cadence & Aydin Gaiser; sisters, Iris Jimerson of Pittsburg, CA; Betty Ogbourne of Osceola; sister-in-law, Marie Jones of Grand River, IA; as well as many other relatives and a host of friends.
