Dale Emmett Campbell, 96, was born November 21, 1915, on a farm near Rouleau, Saskatchewan, Canada to Leslie Emmet and Carrie (Atkins) Campbell. He lived there until he was eight years old when he was sent back to Woodbine, Iowa to live with his aunt to start school before his parents moved back to Iowa. He went to school through the 8th grade obtaining his certificate of graduation after taking the 8th grade exam at the Logan, Iowa Courthouse. He grew up on a farm near Woodbine, Iowa and in the 1930's the family moved to a farm around Castana, Iowa. Dale married Madaleine Milda Steckelberg on October 15, 1940, at the United Church of Christ in Mapleton, Iowa. Together they shared a life of 67 years until Madaleine passed away in 2007, living in the same house in Mapleton for 62 years. They had 5 children: Vernon Dale, Lana Jean, Roger Alan, Michael Dean, and Linda Kay. Dale served in the Army during World War II stationed in the Philippines for most of his tour of duty. Dale was a self employed Dozer (Cat-skinner) man. Many of the terraces and dams around the Mapleton area were made by him. Dale was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Mapleton, IA, having held several offices and the American Legion Loren Hollister Post #496, Mapleton, IA. He was a past member of the Mapleton Masonic Lodge and the Shriners. Dale loved to eat, read, dance, fish, play cards and watch baseball, his favorite teams being the Cardinals and Cubs. He liked watching and listening to Guy Lombardo and Lawrence Welk while enjoying a large bowl of popcorn and a can of Dr. Pepper. In his formative years, he and Madeleine were a fixture at local dances, and he always enjoyed a good fishing trip in the "old hoopie". For several years after his retirement he maintained the car wash in Mapleton. Above all, he loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Dale died at Buena Vista Regional Hospital, Storm Lake, IA on September 12, 2012. Survivors include daughter, Lana (Marc) Lundt, Cushing, IA and son, Roger (Molly Kinney) Campbell, Bakersfield, CA; daughter-in-law, Karol (Holtorf Campbell) Baldwin, Peoria, AZ; and son-in-law, Wayne Hamman, Mapleton, IA; grandchildren, Spencer Campbell and fiance' Seak Lov and her son, Chase Lov, Marshall Lundt and special friend, Sandy Book and her daughter, Dannie Book, Kayla Lundt, Jennifer (Andy) Reta, Nicholas Campbell, Carrie (Ray) Dirksen, Corey (Amy Bechen) Hamman, and Cody Hamman and fiance', Emily Benedict; great-grandchildren, Travis and Britany Campbell, Jack, and Colin Reta, Elizabeth and Abigail Dirksen, Chloe and Ali Rose Hamman, and Avery Lundt; and one great grandson due in October. Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Madeleine; sons, Vernon and Michael; and daughter, Linda; his parents, Leslie and Carrie Campbell; his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann (Campbell) and Lyle Lynn; sister-in-law, Bernadine (Steckelberg) and Earl Jacobs; and brother-in-law, Willis and Violet (Miller) Steckelberg. Pallbearers will be grandchildren.
