He was born August 22, 1914 at Horace Greeley County, Nebraska to Edward Rufus and Cora Lillian Clapp Douthit. Dale was the 4th of eight children. He graduated from Horace High School in 1932. Dale worked for area farmers until 1935 when he came to Crawford to see a grade school classmate, Wanda Gibbons. He was born August 22, 1914 at Horace Greeley County, Nebraska to Edward Rufus and Cora Lillian Clapp Douthit. Dale was the 4th of eight children. He graduated from Horace High School in 1932. Dale worked for area farmers until 1935 when he came to Crawford to see a grade school classmate, Wanda Gibbons. Wanda and Dale were married August 4th, 1936 at Hot Springs, South Dakota with Charles Anderson and Gladys (Peggy) McMeekin as witnesses. Dale worked in the area for local farmers, the city of Crawford, Hagemeister Grain Co. and the WPA building dog kennels at Fort Robinson, and while living at Glen their son Melvin Dale (1939) was born. They moved to Clarks, Ne. where daughter Norma Jo was born in 1940. Later they moved back to the Crawford area becoming partners with Wanda's parents William Roy and Rosella Thornton Gibbons. Son Lonnie Dean was born while living there in 1946. Nineteen months later they were surprised by the birth of twins Gaylen Roy and Gayle Joy l947. In 1955 the family moved to Whitney where Dale farmed, drove truck for Daniels and they owned D. and W. Café and Filling Station. Dale went to work for the State of Nebraska road department and retired in 1980 as road superintendent. After retirement Dale worked for NRD, the city Cemetery maintenance and SWANN retiring a second time in 2006. Dale was a member of the Congregational Church and FOE Eagles as treasure many years. Dale enjoyed his children and grandchildren activities, dancing, junking and rides in the country, especially to his son Lonnie's ranch. Dale was preceded in death by his wife Wanda 1990 of 53 years, his sons Melvin 1991 and Gaylen 2005. His grandson Rocky Jo Colburn l980 and Jean Ann Douthit 2005, His siblings Ellis, Earl, Milton Marjorie, Donald and Dean Surviving Dale are his children Norma Cozad of Wood Lake, Lonnie (Verona) of Crawford and Gayle (Danny) Stetson of Chadron. His daughters in law Lois Douthit of Fort Collin, CO and Shirley Douthit of Crawford. There are 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren and his sister Dorothy Petroni of El Cerrita, CA.and brother in law Thayer Smith of Rocklin, CA. many nieces and nephews and a host of friends especially those employees and residence of Ponderosa Assisted Living. Services are Monday June 4th 10:30 at the Congregational Church with Pastor Bill Bagley officiating. Burial will follow in the Crawford Cemetery. Arrangement is under the direction of the Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford.
