Description	:	Dale Elmer ("Whitey" or "Jack") Meyer, the son of Alfred C. and Ella C. (Palas) Meyer, was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Postville. He was baptized Nov. 13, 1927, by the Reverend E.F. Finck, and confirmed April 13, 1941, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Whitey graduated from Postville High School in 1945. (Palas) Meyer, was born Oct. 10, 1927, in Postville. He was baptized Nov. 13, 1927, by the Reverend E.F. Finck, and confirmed April 13, 1941, both in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville. Whitey graduated from Postville High School in 1945. He entered the United States Army Sept. 14, 1950, and was transferred to the Army Reserve Sept. 17, 1952. He was honorably discharged April 1, 1957. On June 20, 1953, Whitey was married to Evelyn Louise Krambeer at the home of her mother, Cora Krambeer, by the Reverend Walter T. Martin. They had one son, Gem. Whitey worked with his father in their hatchery located on Main Street, just north of the Lutheran Church. In 1965, Evelyn and Whitey opened a restaurant called The Grill, which they operated for over 25 years. They also owned and operated Postville's first coin-operated laundromat, and Whitey delivered Borden's dairy products for many years. After retirement, Whitey worked part-time for the Postville Herald Leader. Whitey was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church in Postville, the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, and the Postville Lions Club. He was active in the community, striving to make it a better place in which to live. He was instrumental in purchasing the Lion's Club food stand and assisted in raising funds for their many community projects. He was serving his third term on the Postville City Council at the time of his death. He died Monday May 28, 2001, at Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon. He had reached the age of 73 years, 7 months, and 18 days. Funeral services were held Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Whitey was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dean Meyer. Surviving were his wife, Evelyn; a son, Gem Meyer and his wife, Michelle; a granddaughter, Hannah Meyer, of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a sister, Jane Ann and her husband, Joseph Panoch, Jr., of Castalia; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
