He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine on Feb. 3, 2006, and a son, Delbert. Survivors are: sons, Don Schmidt of St. Paul and his fiance, TaLana Chamberlain of Stanton, and Jim Schmidt of St. Paul; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Rick Kwiatkowski of St. Paul; grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff and Tanya Crouch, JoAnna and Jeremy (Crouch) Ringlein, Amy (Crouch) and Tim Hewitt, Matt Schmidt, Corey and Heather Schmidt, Jennifer and Joel May and Jenny Schmidt; and 11 great-grandchildren, Emily, Madison, Peyton, Erica, Hunter, Alexander, Ella, Caeden, Ian, Brice and Macy and a host of friends and relatives. Dale was raised by an uncle and aunt, John and Anna Schmidt at Dannebrog because of the death of Dale's mother when he was four days old. He attended country school east of Dannebrog. After his schooling, he worked for John Schmidt on the farm near Dannebrog. Dale entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 20, 1942. He served as a light truck driver. He served in Normandy, Belgium, Northern France, Ardiennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. Dale was the first person drafted from Howard County during World War II. He received his discharge on Dec. 2, 1945. Dale was united in marriage to Maxine Friedrichsen on Sept. 18, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kan. The couple first lived near Dannebrog. They then moved their belongings by horse and wagon to a farm near Elba. Dale worked breaking horses and also worked for Earl Conway using a bulldozer to build farm dams. For a short time he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1955, he began working for the Nebraska Department of Roads in the maintenance department. He retired in 1990. After his retirement he attended auctions and found other ways to keep busy. He also had a tree and stump removal business. He and his wife Maxine loved to dance and Dale enjoyed listening to country music. He was a very good marksman and he enjoyed shooting bluerocks. Dale loved all of nature, wildlife and the outdoors. He liked to fish and hunt. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul and a past member of the Eagle's Club in Grand Island. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Clifford Schmidt; and three sisters, Inez Livingston, Lorna Schmidt and Aileen Schmidt.
