Visitation with his family present will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at George Boom Funeral Chapel in Brandon with the Holy Rosary being said at 7:00 PM. Dale Matthew Coughlin, son of Leo James and Hazel (McCaskell) Coughlin, was born November 10, 1925 at DeSmet, SD. He attended grade school in the country schools and graduated from DeSmet High School in 1943. Upon graduation he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy during WW II and was honorably discharged in June of 1946. During his time in the Navy he spent 21 months in the South Pacific. He was assigned to PT Boat Squadron in New Guinea and moved up to the war zone in the Philippines taking part in the Battle of Luzon invasion. At the wars’ end his PT squadron was patrolling the Dutch East India Islands. He was awarded two battle stars. Dale was united in marriage with Beverly Beryl Hauck on February 8, 1947 at St. Thomas Catholic Church rectory in DeSmet. He worked for the ASC office for about a year before starting work at the DeSmet News. Dale spent nearly 25 years at the News before going into the insurance business as a salesman in DeSmet. The couple then moved to Watertown, SD and started their own agency. He spent 25 years in the insurance business before retiring and building a home on Lake Poinsett. He served on the DeSmet School Board as a member and president for 12 years; was Commander of the VFW of DeSmet and a member for over 70 years as well as the American Legion for over 70 years; was a charter and honorary member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight of the local council in DeSmet and Deputy Grand Knight on the state level. He served on the church council at Estelline and the Benedictine Sisters Foundation Board in Watertown for several years. He served on several committees in the insurance field along with being president of the Watertown Life Underwriters Association. Dale was also chosen to serve on the Provident Life Insurance board of directors in Bismarck, ND for three years. He was honored to speak at several national conventions of Provident National Life and Reliastar Insurance Companies where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Provident Life. He was a life member of the Watertown Elks and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, as well as his favorite pastimes of cooking and gardening. He enjoyed his grandchildren and family taking them on trips to Walt Disney World and to the Pacific Northwest. Together with his wife, Beverly, Dale enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Florida and Texas. The couple have made their home at Bethany Meadows in Brandon the past six years where he was also a member of Risen Savior Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Beverly, Brandon; two sons, Michael (Robyn), Brandon, Brian, Mt. Hood, OR; two daughters, Jan Marler, Tyler, TX and Judy (Jim) Gillies) Portland, OR; seven grandchildren; 13 ½ great grandchildren; and one sister, Elaine Kazmerzak. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Niemann and a brother LeVere Coughlin. A memorial fund has been established. - George Boom Funeral Home
