Johnson who died late Sunday May 11, 2003 at the Lennox Good Samaritan Center. He attained the age of 79 years, ten Dale Maurice Johnson was born on June 29, 1923 at Lennox the son of Bruno and Minnie (VanBockern) Johnson. He grew up in this area, attending school and graduating from Lennox High School in 1941. He served in the US Army for four years during World War II, driving an amphibian tank. Dale was united in marriage to Gladys Smidt on Aug. 1, 1952. The couple lived in Lennox. Dale was employed at John Morrell & Co. until the couple started a gift shop and nursery in Lennox, Johnson's Evergreen Farm. They sold the Evergreen Farm when Dale was diagnosed with diabetes and heart problems in 1985. His death ended a marriage union of over 50 years. In early years, Dale worked at Mattheis Implement. He sold DeLavel Cream Separators, took care of the Bernard Thomas properties for 50 years and helped at the funeral home, first for L.W. Dindot and continued into the 1980's. He designed the logo for the Cammack Shows and painted the merry-go-round horses. After his retirement he worked for Peterson Monument Co. at Canton. Dale belonged to First English Lutheran Church, was a member of Masons and Eastern Star and was past-commander of Brethorst-Burma American Legion Post #174 in Lennox. He served on the Lennox City Council for several years was a member of the founding board of directors of Sunrise Manor and the board of directors at Lennox Good Samaritan Center. He loved going to Cenex and the Bakery to talk and tell jokes. Dale had a great sense of humor. He loved to trap, fish and do carpentry work. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Lorraine Sweeter and a brother, Lee Johnson. Grateful for having shared his life are his widow, Gladys; three sisters: Joyce Kaskie and her husband, Bernard, of Lennox, Darlene Hofer and her husband, Jacob of Dolton, SD and Ruth Schrader and her husband, Duane, of Shoreview, MN; his mother-in-law, Christine Smidt, of Lennox; brother-in-law, Herman Smidt and his wife, Barbara, of Sioux Falls sister-in-law, Joyce Molstad and good friend, Jerry Kruger, of Sioux Falls, sister-in-law, Sarafern Johnson of Lennox; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
