Dale Phillip Lahner was born Dec. 14, 1926, in New Hampton, Iowa. His Baptism was performed on Sept. 6, 1942. His proud parents, Alva Leon Lahner and Fern (Lahner) Rodruck, raised their family in Arlington and Oelwein. Dale was a graduate of Clarksville High School in 1945. He was homecoming king his senior year. . Upon graduation, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Army and took boot camp training in Ft. Hood, Texas. He was shipped to Germany before before the end of World War II. His uncommon sense of duty and ethics assured his appointment as a guard inside the courtroom of the Nuremberg Trials. . After returning to the United States, he continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves. Dale was named Most Outstanding officer in his regiment while serving in Wisconsin before receiving an Honorable Discharge as a Master Sergeant. . Dale dated Luella Marie Siems for six weeks, and then asked for her hand in marriage. They were married January 11, 1948, in Sheffield. The electrical business intrigued Dale, and that is the career he chose. He owned and operated Sheffield Electric for approximately 50 years. . Friends remember his working for no charge if his customers had more need than income. He frequently sponsored movies at the Sheffield Theater in the Christmas season. . Other local contributions include eight years on the Sheffield City Council; over 40 years on the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department; delivering Meals on Wheels; and coaching literally hundreds of young boys, including all four of his sons, on Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. His standard gesture after each game was 'Popcorn and Orange Crush for all of the boys, I'll buy.' . Dale also donated The Sharing Shoppe to the town of Sheffield. . Dale's story cannot be written without mentioning his wife. Dale and Lu have been members of the First United Methodist Church where Dale had been on the Board of Trustees until his death. He was no stranger to volunteer work, as he shingled church property, even after a massive heart attack in 1991 left him with only 14 percent of his heart functioning. . A special highlight for Dale and Lu was a completed mission project in Wassilla, Alaska, in 1990. They helped rewire a church, gardened, and did general maintenance. . Together, Dale and Lu were Grand Marshals of the 1993 Sourdough Days Parade in Sheffield. . Although he did much for the community, none felt his love more than his family. His favorite family activities were the annual vacation to Mayflower Lodge in Deer River, Minn.; trips to the Mississippi River; and Father's Day picnics at their local farm. . Dale leaves behind his loving wife, Lu, of Sheffield; children Susan (Lahner) Harris and her husband, Michael, of Sheffield; Stephen Lahner and his wife, Luanna, of Clear Lake, Iowa; David Lahner and wife, Nancy, of Boone, Iowa; Jean (Lahner) Brandt and husband, Mark, of Dallas Center, Iowa; Mary (Lahner) Kranz and husband, Michael, of Klemme, Iowa; William Lahner and wife, Annette, of Sheffield; Anne (Lahner) Foster and husband, David, of Belmond, Iowa; Peter Lahner of Shawnee, Kansas; two sisters: Eva Roberts of Alexandrea, Minn., and Edie Kammrad of Omaha, Arkansas; his mother, Fern Rodruck of Sheffield, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of friends. . Lu's initial comment after Dale's last breath was, 'He's got a home in Glory Land!' . He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Beryl Lahner and LaVeryl Lahner; stepfather, (Unidentified newspaper - Furnished by Patricia (Davis) Brandt).
