Dale Robert Williams was born November 21, 1924 at Ames, Iowa, the son of Lee A. and Martha (Gruetzmacher) Williams and was baptized that day. He was confirmed on May 29, 1938 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate by Rev. Otto Schultz. In May of 1938, he graduated from St. Peter Lutheran School and in 1942, he graduated from Maynard Consolidated High School. He proudly served in the United States Marines Corps during World War II. Dale was a gunner with Regimental Weapons Co. 24th Regiment 4th Marine Division. The 4th Division was known as The Fighting 4th Home Base Maui, Hawaii. After the war, he transferred to Oahu and was a Statistician with the Fleet Max Force Pacific. After returning home he farmed until he was 65. On August 26th, 1944, he was united in marriage to Fern Meyer at Long Beach, California. This union was blessed with five children and they also raised a nephew: Jerry Donald Meyer. Fern died on July 5, 1988. Dale retired from farming and drove school bus for West Central School for 16 years and 10 months. On February 8, 1991, he was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Hoehne at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Messerer-Fox American Legion Post # 92 of Westgate, where he held several offices. At one time he served as a 4H leader and the Fayette County Cattlemen's Association. He received the distinguished Service Award from Coach Ferentz for Iowa High School Football Coaches Association and the Older Iowan Certificate Award from Governor Vilsack. In September of 2011, Dale went on the Veteran's Honor Flight. Dale is survived by his wife: Phyllis Williams of Fayette; 4 children: Susan Groth of Dubuque, Julie Williams of Oelwein, Sally (Scott) Ives of Oelwein and Jack Williams of Westgate; foster daughter-in-law: Iva Meyer of Oelwein; 4 step sons: Randy Hoehne of Manchester, Kevin Hoehne of Sumner, Darrell (Doah) Hoehne of Eldon and Brent (Christine) Hoehne of Ham Lake, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren: David Groth, Jessica (Brandon) Cooper, Andrew (Shelby) Williams, Lindy Williams (Colin Weber), Shawna (Jon) Linn and Shannon (Seth) Mehring; 7 step grandchildren: David (Becky) Hoehne, Amy Hoehne, Michelle Hoehne, Jonathon Hoehne, Madison Hoehne, Alex Hoehne and Mackenzie Hoehne; 6 great grandchildren; and 2 step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife: Fern Williams; infant son: Greg Williams; foster son: Jerry Meyer; infant foster granddaughter: Lynsey Meyer; and 2 sisters: Virginia Williams and Dora Decker.
