Dana was born September 13, 1919 in Dardanelle to the late Henry C. and Nora Robinson Merritt of Dardanelle. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Patricia McConnell. Dana was a lifelong farmer in Yell County and Mayor of Dardanelle for 24 years, retiring in 1994. Dana was inducted into the Dardanelle High School Hall of Honor in 1999. Dana is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia (Sue) Merritt of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Martha Merritt of Dardanelle; a son-in-law Bruce McConnell of Dardanelle; two brothers, Denver Merritt of Paris, and Delma Merritt of Dardanelle; one sister, Elizabeth Lane of Dardanelle; six grandchildren, Beth Holler of Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, Stephanie Pulliam of Conyers, Georgia, Susan Haile of Pangburg, Mike and Chris Merritt of Dardanelle, Mark Merritt of Peachtree City, Georgia, and thirteen great-children. Graveside service was held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 25 at Brearley Cemetery and a Memorial Service was at 2 p.m. at The Dardanelle Community Center by Reverends Floyd Irvin and Paul Seay under the direction of Dardanelle Funeral Service.
