A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2016, at New Era Lutheran Church, Muscatine. Private burial will take place at Harker Cemetery at a later date. Online condolences: www.wittichfuneralhome.com. Dan lived on the family farm, where he was born on April 19, 1921, in rural Muscatine, the son of Frank O. and Ruby Edwards Sauer. He married Betty M. Silberhorn on Sept. 13, 1945, in Muscatine. He retired from John Deere after more than 20 years with the company. He and his wife operated the Golden Chain Café in Lowden, Iowa, and later, Sauer’s Dining Wheel Cafeteria in Muscatine. He was also known as the storyteller at the bait counter at Scott’s Outdoors. He was a member of New Era Lutheran Church. Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Betty Sauer, Muscatine; two sons, Barry Sauer, and wife, Janis, Wilton, Iowa, and Scott Sauer, and wife, Jane, Muscatine; one daughter, Vicki Hampton, and husband, Terry, Dumas, Texas; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Amy, Molly, Rebecca, Andrew, Neil, Jennifer and Melissa; and 12 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Craig Sauer; one sister, Dorothy Thomas; and one nephew, Lane Sadler. Courtesy of The Muscatine Journal
