'Al' Bariault, 63, know as "Mr. Kamiakin" for his leadership in Kamiakin Kiwanis Club and for his role as a booster of worthwhile community, youth and athletic activities in Yakima, died late Monday in Yakima Valley Hospital following an apparent heart attack in his home. Mr. Bariault was born in Union Gap Aug. 21, 1919, to Joseph and Pearl Bariault, was raised and educated in Toppenish and graduated from toppenish High School with the class of 1937. On May 2, 1942 he married Frieda Owens in Union Gap. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from 1942 until 1946 and upon his return to Yakima he operated a service station for one year. Mr. Bariault was then employed at Lynch Motors for 10 years as a salesman and sales manager and in 1958 he started United Tire Service at 101 S. Fifth Ave. He was owner and president of the business until a month ago. He was working as a salesman for Realty World-England and Associates at the time of his death. Mr. Bariault and W.K. "Pete" Moore spearheaded formation of Kamiakin Club-an offshoot of Yakima Kiwanis Club-in 1956. He was the charter president of the new club which recently awarded him its Legion of Honor for 25 years perfect attendance. He was past lieutenant governor of Division 50Kiwanis Internation with clubs from Sunnyside to Lake Chelan and Roslyn to Columbia Basin. He was the spark plug of Kamiakin Club and the key to its successes. If he was supportive of a program he went all the way."Moore said adding that Bariault boosted all worthwhile athletic particularly football . He was one of three key people in rebuiling the Boy Scout's Camp Fife in Goose Prairie about 20 years ago. Moore recalled. He had been on the Grant Street Work Release Advisory Board since 1973 and was current chairman. Fellow Kiwaman Dennis Englund said Bariault believed in the progam because it gives a convicted person a second chance at being a good citizen and permits him to work and repay his victims and save taxpayers money.He was a member of the First Presbytrian Church of Yakima . Yakima Lodge No. 24 F&Am and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He Was a member of American Legion Logan Wheeler Post, Yakima Elks Lodge 318, a charter member and past president of the Footprinters Association member and past commodore of the Yakima Valley Book Club and belonged to the Yakima Engineers Club. Survivors includ his wife, Frieda Bariault of Yakima; a son, Dan Bariault of Seattle; a daughter, Mrs. Ross (Suzanne) Cadigan of Yakima; two siters, Mrs. Mary Morford and Mrs. Margaret Morford both of Yakima and four grandchildren, Shawn and Devin Cadigan, both of Yakima and Lindsey and Evan Bariault both of Seattle.
