Dan was born in Wapato, WA and raised in Medicine Valley 7 miles west of White Swan. He attended 12 years of school in White Swan, graduating in 1957 from White Swan High. He excelled in 4 sports and was a champion javelin thrower in the state. According to this senior annual, he was a “swell” guy, with “swell clothes.” Dan became a “Book Worm” at a very young age. By the time he was in the third grade, he would read the “Daily Newspaper” all the way through before he got on the school bus in the morning. This continued all thru his life. Books and more books. His father was Art Carey, mother Eva Louella (Weeks) Carey. He lost her when he was 10 years old. Dan was born on Aug. 4, 1939. It was a very hot day, the whole backside of Medicine Valley was on fire, causing a lot of commotion with machinery and fire fighters. After high school he attended YVC for a time, then he decided to attend Barber School in Yakima. After finishing school, he moved to Seattle and become a “Barber.” His shop was on Richmond Beach. He spent 60 years in Seattle. He was still living in the home on Fremont Ave. Dan enjoyed Seattle – he loved Seattle – fishing on the ocean, out on the water in a boat. He liked elk hunting, but only the camping part, he never shot an elk in his life. He volunteered for several years at the food banks, he liked talking to the people, he had plenty of stories from that venture to entertain all of us. Dan just wanted to be an ordinary person, but he had some unique ways and sayings that made him a cut above. Dan had many friends in Seattle and White Swan, he never let any of them down, but he didn’t take any “bull.” Dan, you are one of a “kind.” Dan retired from the Barber Shop and did some traveling. He and some of his favorite people owned “Dune Buggies.” They roamed the “outbacks” of Medicine Valley and the Simcoe Ridge. He owns land in Medicine Valley and always intended to move back but couldn’t seem to break loose from Seattle. He is survived by daughter Shannon of Wapato, WA, granddaughter Stephanie of Arizona, 2 great-grandsons. Darien and Tony, 2 brothers, Mike of White Swan, Tom of California, sister Evelyn Petty of Yakima, 32 nieces and nephews are missing their uncle Dan. Many cousins in New London, WS. Waiting for him up yonder his parents Art and Louella, brother Ed Carey and sister Nadine McLavey. Dan, you were and always will be “one of a kind.” Funeral Services will be held on Monday April 1st , 2019 at Colonial Funeral Home at 11 AM. Interment will follow at Reservation Community Memorial Park West of Wapato.
