Description	:	Daniel Bertine Stewart was one of the best known and perhaps the most active and extensively engaged business man in Athens County. Read More	Daniel Bertine Stewart was one of the best known and perhaps the most active and extensively engaged business man in Athens County. Besides the business of milling, which he carried on throughout his life, he combined with it extensive farming, railroad projecting, merchandising, and was connected with a number of large moneyed corporations operating at Athens and elsewhere. When sixteen years of age he entered his father's flouring mill, took charge of it at eighteen, and bought the mill outright at twenty-one. In a short time he disposed of the mill with a large profit and formed a partnership with his brother Alexander at Rutland, Ohio. After two years, he removed to Coolville, in Athens County, and engaged in the mercantile business. In 1837, he relinquished this and moved back to his father's farm and after improving the water power of the Hocking River, he built a sawmill. In 1842, he built a large grist mill nearby and two years later, built a fine woolen mill, the first in Southern Ohio. The business proved very successful. In 1867, as his business interests began to be centered more in Athens, he moved his family to that place. He is universally conceded to be the most active man in building projects in the county. Beginning in 1850, his interests turned toward railroad projecting and figured prominantly in railroad measures calculated to develop the wealth of the State of Ohio. He was credited with being the prime mover in the construction of the Baltimore Short Line, securing the right-of-way, serving as construction superintendant, stockholder, and Director until it was merged with the Baltimore & Ohio. He was also a Direcor of the Atlantic & Lake Erie Railroad. In the 1870's, he promoted the building of other lines to connect the coal fields in the area with the lucrative Eastern markets. Where the C.W. & B. Railroad crossed his land, he laid out the village of Stewart in Rome Township. All of the buildings were put up at his expense and populated by enterprising people supporting his several mills close by. During the Civil War, he supplied means to establish a sutler's shop and as it needed his attention, he travelled south to Tennessee for a time. While there, his efforts were enlisted on behalf of wounded soldiers and he devoted much time to their relief. Although a non-combatant, he was much exposed to enemy fire and often barely escaped capture. In one instance, he was so hard pressed, being hemmed in on all sides, that he took shelter among a stand of evergreens. Having about $3000 in cash on his person, he concealed it under an old rail fence and made his way back to Nashville on foot, trusting his memory to guide him back to the money when it was safe. Several days later he was able to return to the place and found the money intact.
