To celebrate Dan's life, friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. He was born on Nov. 29, 1916, in Sherrill, son of Charles and Anna (Spoerl) Baal. He was a lifelong resident of Sherrill. Dan learned the blacksmith trade from his father and began working with him in 1930. He was a blacksmith and could fix anything that came into his door or driveway. He married Martha O'Neal on June 9, 1990, in Dubuque; she preceded him in death in 1997. He was a lifelong member of Sherrill UCC Church. His love and respect to others reflected his deep commitment to the Lord. Dan enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his friend, Ruth Beddow, for the past 12 years. He loved being out in the timber chopping and stacking wood. Dan enjoyed his flowers and tomato plants around the house and garage. All of his life he was surrounded by his friends; he will be missed by all. Surviving are a son, Daniel Baal II, of Ozark, Ark.; three nieces, Doris (Barron) Katchka, of Dubuque, Genevieve (David) Robinson, Harrison, Mich., and Verena Love, of Waterford, Mich.; a nephew, David (Judy) Baal, of Prescott, Ariz. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Baal; and a nephew, Richard Baal.
