Description	:	Daniel Edward Donahey was born February 8, 1937 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa to Dan L. and Lottie (Cook) Donahey. He left this world on August 3, 2018 at the age of 81. He grew up on a farm southwest of Panora and graduated from Panora High School in 1954. Dan earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1958. Read More	Daniel Edward Donahey was born February 8, 1937 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa to Dan L. and Lottie (Cook) Donahey. He left this world on August 3, 2018 at the age of 81. He grew up on a farm southwest of Panora and graduated from Panora High School in 1954. Dan earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1958. After college, he moved to Santa Monica, California with some Iowa State buddies who all had jobs in the aerospace/defense industry. He worked for Douglas Aircraft and North American Rockwell-both companies are now part of Boeing. He worked on the Nike Zeus Ballistic Missile Defense System, on the separation and destruct systems of the Saturn V Rocket, and on the crew escape system on the B-1 bomber. The work was all very exciting and challenging. In the meantime, he married his wife of 53 years, Mary Elizabeth (Bette) Pate on November 14, 1964 in Whittier, California. Together they had three children: Michael, Lisa and Mark. They lived in Bellflower, California until 1973. It became apparent that you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy. The family moved to Panora at that time. They traded an engineering job, traffic, congestion and smog for Guthrie County. It was the best decision of a lifetime. Dan totally enjoyed raising cattle, corn, and soybeans. He served on the boards of Panora State Bank and Panora Co-op and was especially proud of his involvement in the development of Heartland Co-op. He was an active member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church. He enjoyed his morning ritual of coffee at the Co-op followed by greeting folks at the post office. He retired from full time farming in 2007. Winters spent in Phoenix would have been perfect had the coffee group from the Co-op been there. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Lottie Donahey and his brother Mike. Left to mourn his loss are his wife, Bette; his children, Michael (Carolyn) Donahey of Phoenix, Lisa (Steve) Stacy of Urbandale, and Mark (Ashley) Donahey of Paris, France; as well as eight loving granddaughters: Megan Elizabeth, Julianne Sheridan, Katherine Mary, Kelly Barbara and Bridget Lisa Donahey; Danielle Reagan, Allison Rose, and Jennifer Elizabeth Stacy. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Donahey BVM of Dubuque and his brother, Tom (Linda) Donahey of Redmond, Washington. Dan was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly missed. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Panora. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, rural Guthrie Center.
