Description	:	Daniel Francis O'Rourke or Rouarke was born in Co Wexford Ireland 1797 or 1808. He immigrated to Van Diemen's Land as an assisted immigrant in 1833. Tradesmen were needed in the new colony and the assisted immigration scheme had been set up in answer to the problem. A letter dated 24-01-1833, between Downing St. (England) and Governor Arthur in Tasmania, introduced "Daniel Roarke, aged 24, his wife [Catherine], aged 23 and children James 3 and Margaret 2" and requested that 20 pounds be paid to Mr. P. Codd for their passage out. Daniel's trade was listed as a housesmith. The Strathfieldsay bought 168 tradesmen, including 8 Sawyers, 21 Carpenters and just 1 housesmith. He, his wife Catherine Dunn (c.1809-1842), and their son, James, arrived from in Hobart from Dublin on 26 June 1833 aboard the Strathfieldsay. There is discrepancy between the age given in the introductory letter for Daniel and the age recorded on his headstone. When Daniel died in 1878 his age was given as 81. This would put his birth as 1797, whereas his age on arrival was given as 24 which would make 1808 his year of birth. Daniel and Catherine had 5 more children in Cygnet, but sadly only 3 (Bridget, Christina, & Charles) survived till adulthood. According to the 1842 Census, Daniel "Rook" lived in a bark dwelling at Port Cygnet with his wife and three children. Catherine O'Rourke died in childbirth 2 Nov 1842. Two years later, Daniel married the widow Mary Ann Willett, (née Devereux) (1815-1857). The couple had 4 boys, Daniel 1845-1945, Alexander b.1849, Philip (1852-1938), and Simon Peter (1854-1910) According to the 1851 Census, Daniel Rourke lived at Nichols Rivulet with his wife, six sons and one daughter. He bought 19 and three quarters acre at Agnes Rivulet in 1853. In May 1856 he was elected as a trustee for the Port Cygnet Road District. He is listed in the 1857 Kingborough census(p.10) He owned a house and farm on 20 acres at Agnes Rivulet, near Port Cygnet (VR58). He is listed as a farmer living at Port Cygnet in 1867. Daniel O'Rourke died in 1878 and was buried in St. James Catholic Cemetery, Cygnet. The headstone was damaged in abt 2002, and last known to be with Paul O'Rourke, descendant of Philip
