The next job was a newspaper route for a morning and an evening paper. I kept that job for several years. For most people, they thought the job paid too little and the hours too long. It was here that I met the closest thing to a friend I ever had. His name was Dan Bain and he was a few years older than I was. He knew what hard times were and he could sympathize with me. When times first got bad, his parents took the small children and left telling him he was on his own. He could see that I was sure naïve about the real world and being around nothing but women sure hadn't prepared me to get by in the world on my own. Feeling sorry for me, he used to tell about what it was like to get by on your own. He was in love with a girl and wanted to marry her. When he found out that I knew the girl, in fact, she was in my high school class, we then became close because he could talk to me about his girlfriend. After a short time, I could see that Dan was upset about something. He said that the girl loved him, but she didn't think it would be a good idea to marry Dan because a Jewish fellow that had a business wanted to marry her. He could give her a life where she could have everything. When I saw the marriage announcement in the local paper that the girl was going to marry the businessman, I went looking for Dan. Nobody knew where he was. When he was found, he was dead. He had drunk a bottle of carbolic acid. The paper said that nobody knew why Dan had killed himself - but I knew.
