It is interesting to study the life record of such a man as Daniel G. Bauman, an honored citizen of Liscomb, Marshall county, owing to the fact that he began life under none too favorable auspices, and in battling his own way through the world he has not only succeeded remarkably well in the temporal things of life, but has done a great amount of good to his fellow men and is therefore deserving of the high esteem in which he is held by all who know him and that includes the major portion of the residents of Marshall county. Mr. Bauman is one of the enterprising coterie of native sons of Somerset county, Pennsylvania, who came to Marshall county in her first stages of development and, putting their shoulders fearlessly to the wheel, have done much for the general upbuilding of the same. His birth occurred there on February 7, 1848, and he is the son of Gideon and Elizabeth (Boyer) Bauman, both natives of the locality mentioned above. Gideon Bauman was the son of Daniel Bauman, a soldier in the war of 1812. He went from Berks county to Somerset county, Pennsylvania, about 1780. His grandfather came to this country from Switzerland in the early history of the republic. The subjects great-grandfather and two brothers on the maternal side were in the French and Indian war and were with General Braddock at the time of his disastrous defeat. Grandfather Bauman took up farming in Pennsylvania, locating in Somerset county about 1780, where he spent the remainder of his life. The maternal grandfather, Jonathan Boyer. was also born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, and there lived on a farm. There were thirteen children in the family of our subjects paternal grandfather, twelve of whom grew to maturity, four serving in the Civil war; one, Joel, is still living. Gideon Bauman, father of the subject, was a farmer and carpenter by occupation, and politically he was first a Whig, then a Republican. He voted for Fremont, some sixty years ago. He and his family were members of the Reformed church. He and his wife were the parents of eight children, of whom five are living. The father's death occurred in 1899, his wife having preceded him to the grave in 1896. Daniel G. Bauman was reared on the farm and he has made agriculture his chief life work. He received a good education in the public schools in Pennsylvania and a normal school, and he began life by teaching, later studying surveying, which line of endeavor he followed in his native state from 1871 to 1879, when he came to Illinois and worked on a farm near Dixon for nearly two years, and on November 5, 1880, he came to Liscomb, Marshall county, Iowa, and worked by the day for some time. In the fall of 1881 he bought eighty acres in Liscomb township. He has been successful as a farmer, but he has always resided in Liscomb, where he has a substantial and attractive residence. He also owns other valuable property, including the building occupied by the postoffice, and that of the Reformed church. He is a stockholder and director in the State Savings Bank of Liscomb. He has made his own property without the aid or influence of any one, working his way step by step to the front rank of substantial citizens of this locality, having accumulated rapidly, for he worked at home until he was thirty-one years of age. then started in life for himself. Politically, Mr. Bauman is a Republican, and he has always taken an abiding interest in the welfare of his community along all lines; he has been school director for about eighteen years. He has served in a most commendable manner as mayor of Liscomb, also as a member of the council and as recorder. He and his family are members of the Reformed church, and liberal supporters of the same. Mr. Bauman is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, being a past grand and at present secretary of Liscomb Lodge No. 242. He also belongs to the Brotherhood of American Yeoman, and he is correspondent and treasurer of that homestead. Mr. Bauman was married on February 3, 1880, to Matilda Engle, a native of Somerset county, Pennsylvania, who was born January 8, 1854. She is the daughter of Solomon Engle, mentioned elsewhere in this work, whose grandfather was in the Revolutionary army. To Mr. and Mrs. Bauman the following children have been born: Lepha Denetta, born in Liscomb, November 25, 1880, graduated from the local high school and taught in this township for several years, and she is now the wife of Guy V. Van Vorhis, of Grundy county; they live on a farm and have one daughter, Wilma May; Clara Agnes, born November 26, 1884, graduated from the Liscomb high school and later attended the State Normal at Cedar Falls, after which she taught at Laurel and in the rural schools of Marshall and Grundy counties; she was appointed postmistress in 1909 and now holds that office, discharging her duties in a manner that reflects much credit upon herself and to the entire satisfaction of the department and of all concerned. Her father is assistant postmaster.
