Daniel Howorth, who settled in Iowa at an early age, had watched life on our prairies bowl along for the greater part of his near one hundred years. He welcomed the railroad, the telephone, the automobile, and the advancing education. From an industrious, temperate young farmer he became an affluent, fore-sighted citizen of this community. His death leaves more than a host of mournful relatives and friends. It has been 85 years since Mr. Howorth came to America. Seventy-five of those years have been spent in fruitful labor at or near Dunlap. In the beginning he purchased virgin land from the government at $1.25 an acre. This formed tow farms, the Manteno farm in Shelby county, and a farm in Douglas township, Harrison county. The old Post road of 1858, which passed through Omstead, Manteno, Kanesville (now Council Bluffs), and Fort Dodge, was near his farms. He traveled that road and others on horseback, buying stock from the various farmers and shipping it off when he had a carload. His was a familiar figure to the settlers of that community. He knew James Billings, who will be remembered as the universally like stage coach driver. Mr. Howorth saw the town of Dunlap platted on June 26, 1867. A little later, on July 5, 1867, Rufus Harrington, a railroad carpenter, had finished the first house to be erected in Dunlap. In the same year a round house was erected and Dunlap became a railroad division. The first Congregational church of which Mr. Howorth has for many years been a member, was built in 1867. The first minister was the Rev. John B. Lowery, whose place was later taken by a man, who will be remembered by many people today, the Rev. C. M. Lyman. As the years passed, Mr. Howorth watched the town fill up and begin to stretch out until it became its present size. Until recent months, Mr. Howorth made a diurnal visit down town and regularly attended services at the Congregational church. Of late, however, he had been confined to his room, in spite of which he remained cheerful. He never lost interest in the affairs of life, and to many relatives and friends, he was "Uncle Dan." The funeral services were conducted at the Congregational church, Saturday, July 21, by the pastor, the Reverend C. S. Colburn. The interment was in the cemetery at Dunlap, beside his wife and children. Funeral hymns, "No Night There," and "Home Of The Soul," were well sung by Mrs. Dave Moore, Mrs. W. L. Reichelt, M. B. Baily and Rev. Colburn. The pertinent points of a pioneer's life read as follows: Daniel Howorth, son of Edmund and Mary Howorth, was born in Bacup, Rossendale, Lancashire, England, on December 22, 1830. He departed this life July 19, 1928, at Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 97 years, 6 months, and 27 days. He was one of a family of seven, the family consisting of four sons and three daughters. When Mr. Howorth was thirteen, he emigrated with his parents and two sisters to this country, settling in Athens County, Ohio, in 1843. A sister and three brothers remained in England, but two of the brothers were to come later. In 1853, the family migrated to this vicinity, settling near Gallands Grove. Mr. Howorth was married to Miss Emma Cook in October, 1867, and to this union were born four children, Carl, Harriet, George, and L. D. Howorth. Of the four children, L. D. Howorth alone survives, the other three having died some years ago. Mrs. Howorth died in 1899, and Mr. Howorth has for many years made his home with his daughter, Harriet and his grand-daughter, Mrs. Frank Hagen. Mr. Howorth's brothers and sisters passed on before him.l They were: John and Ann Howorth of Bacup, England; James Howorth of Tecumseh, Nebraska, Edmund Howorth, of Dow City, and Mary Moorhead, of Moorhead. Mr. Howorth is survived by one son, L. D. Howorth; four grandchildren, Mrs. Frank Hagen, Lawrence, Margaret and Lorenzo Howorth; and two great-grandchildren. His many friends will miss him and mourn his loss. Out-of-town attendants at the funeral were the following: Miss Margaret Howorth, of Ames; Mrs. George W. Roundy, Albert Roundy, Charlie Pitts, of Woodbine; Mrs. E. J. Jones, of Shenandoah; Mr. and Mrs. Isasac Howorth and daughter Sara, Mrs. Edmund Howorth, Wilbur Roberts, of Denison; Alfred Howorth, F. C. Howorth, Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Butterworth and daughter Namoni, of Dow City; Edward Howorth, of Tecumseh, Nebraska; Mrs. Elizabeth Hagen, Mr. and Mrs. E. T.
