Description	:	Dan Gully, 82 of Dexter Township, Lidgerwood, ND died early March 4 at his rural residence. He was a diabetic and was experiencing kidney failure over the last months. Funeral mass will be Saturday, March 12, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood at 12:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 10:30 am until noon at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood in the spring. Daniel James Gully was born February 16, 1929, son of Matthew Walter Gully and Caroline Frances Kulzer. He was his folk's sixth child of ten, 6 boys and 4 girls. He was born in the City of Lidgerwood in a corner house across the street from the high school. When he was a few months old, his family moved onto the Gully farm in Dexter Township following the death of his grandfather and homesteader Richard W. Gully. Dan lived on the Gully farm for the remainder of his life. Dan attended country school Dexter # 5 and graduated from Lidgerwood Public High School 1947. In 1949 he enrolled at North Dakota State University but a call home from his father for help brought him back to the farm. Matt Gully's death in 1952 thrust Dan into farm management at age 23. His mother paid him wages the first year and after that it was Dan's call. In 1954 he had two younger brothers on the farm still in school where he found added responsibility and good help. In 1961, Dan purchased 160 acres from his mother about the year she moved into town. In 1966, he purchased the remaining acres of the Gully farm jointly from his mother and siblings. Dan also purchased more land (the Stibal farm) in 1967 three miles south of the home place adding to his work schedule. At its height, his solo operation took in about 800 acres including the Gully farm, the family's Cayuga farm and his south quarter. Dan's crops varied from year to year; less corn and more small grain, wheat, rye, soy beans and millet. He contracted out most of his swathing. In later years Dan leased his pasture land but did enjoy several successful years with hogs. Everyone enjoyed watching his small brood of turkeys. He maintained a bountiful garden and fruit orchard. Dan's "open door" policy to all members of the Gully clan through the years was well noted. His free conversation, good and generous food and drink and comfortable lodging was much appreciated. His farm was always more than a farmer's workplace, it was a home for all to enjoy. In 1990, the farm received Century Farm designation from the State of North Dakota and Dan celebrated by hosting an outdoor open house party attended by maybe 200 adults and children on a June day of spectacularly beautiful weather. Dan retired in 1991. Steve Ehli and family currently farm Dan's land. They have been good neighbors and recent caregivers during Dan's health decline. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Caroline, stepfather Jay Haring, sister Irene Vaplon, brothers John and Clifford Gully. He is survived by brothers Ray, Bill (Marylin) and Al (Toni) Gully and sisters Mary Dorr (Leo Dorr), JoAnn Nunberg (Frank Nunberg) and Barbara Irvine; sisters-in-law Cindy Gully and Jean Gully; Aunt Eleanor Bommersbach of Wyndmere; twenty-six nieces, twenty-six nephews, several grandnieces and nephews, and other extended family and friends. obituary written by Gregory Dorr
