Mass of Christian burial was Thursday, 3-1-2012 at 10:30AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus, NE, with Reverend Del Lape, Celebrant, and Deacon Mike Placzek. Concelebrating were Reverend John Birkel (brother of the deceased), Reverend Joseph Miksch, Reverend Ferdinand Boehme, Reverend Matthew Eickhoff, Reverend Matthew Vanderwalle. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery in Columbus, NE. Daniel was born on 4-9-1951 to Harold J and Evelyn (Cuba) Birkel in Columbus, NE. He attended school in Genoa, graduating in 1969. After graduation, he attended Wayne State College for three years, majoring in accounting. His family was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa, where he received the sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation and was an altar server. Dan was united in marriage to Mary Preister on August 20, 1976 at St. Leonard Catholic Church in Madison, NE. They were blessed with two daughters, Jami (Mark) Jacobs of Omaha, and Casey Birkel of Yonkers, NY, and one son, Joshua Harold (Stacy) of Manhatten, KS. Dan married Sharon Gahagan Wise on August 17, 2007 in David City, NE, During his life, Dan spent many years working in the transportation and shipping industry. He was a man who knew the best and easiest route from one location to another. He was employed at BMC Transportation Company, Champlain Petroleum Company, Sand Systems, Consolidated Freightways, ABF Trucking, ADM, Veissmans, NATCO and Pioneer Transfer Company. Dan is survived by wife, Sharon of Columbus, his three children and one grandchild, Jacob Andrew Schreiber, six brothers: Alan (Vi) Birkel of Columbus, Matt Birkel of Linwood, Brad Birkel of David City, Jim Birkel of Fremont, Lane Birkel of David City and Reverend Father John Birkel, St Michael Parish in Fairbury, NE, two sisters: Sheila (Dan) Walsh of Snohomish, WA, Denise (Dave) Johnk of Lake Havasu City, AZ and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold and grandparents, John and Helen Cuba; Carl and Alvina Birkel. Dan loved fishing and hunting with his father, Harold, and later with his son, Josh. He was a fan of college football and Nascar. He had a great love and respect of guns and loved to tell hunting and fishing stories. In later years, he collected Chevy Impalas. Dan was a past active member of St. Isidore Catholic Church where he served on the parish council and bazaar committee. In recent years, he was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus, NE We will remember Dan as a man who had goodness in his heart.
