Daniel Joseph Shomo's dad was in the War of 1812. His grandfather and great grandfather were in the Revolutionary War. From this book, it sounds like he was in the Civil War: "Union and Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers of Barbour County, West Virginia". Page 102 mentions his brother, John Madison and Daniel Joseph were in the Civil War, Union Army and both were blacksmiths in Junior, Barbour County, WV; both attended the Methodist-Episcopal Church. Both were born in Shenandoah County, VA and both died in Barbour County, WV. In August, 1973, we visited his grave and his wife's grave. Vernie (Shomo) Phelps remembered where her dad's grandparents' graves were located from visiting them when she was a child. We found the tombstone of Daniel Joseph Shomo with dates: Born 3-16-1830; died 2-3-1898 with the inscription: “Farewell my wife and children all – From you, a father Christ doeth call”. We also found his wife’s tombstone, Sophia V. Hayes as Denver Lee Shomo told us this was her name, with the dates: Born 1828, died 9-6-1900, aged 72 years. Daniel and his wife are buried in a small graveyard located behind the Knights of Pythias Cemetery called the "Shomo Cemetery". You can see this cemetery if you go to the back, to the fence and look to your right in the field. Many of Daniel's children, grandchildren and other relatives are buried at the K & P Cemetery.
