Montezuma Recorder (IA) 27 MAY 1920 HE WAS PREPARED A Pioneer and Civil War Veteran Laid to Rest Daniel Marian Allen was born in Morgan County, Indiana, October 5, 1844, departed this life May 4, 1920 at the age of seventy five years and seven months. His sickness was of short duration, stricken with muscular rheumatism developing into pneumonia. He was one of eight children born to William and Lucinda Allen, came to Poweshiek county with his parents in eighteen hundred and fifty two and settled in Washington Township near what is known as Blue Point, in which county he continued to reside with the exception of three years he spent in the Civil war, enlisting at the age of seventeen in Co. B. 40th Ia. Inf. and served with that co. until the close of the war. He was married to Mary E. Wood, Dec. 31, 1865; to this union were born four children, Burdett, who died at the age of one year, Evelyn, James, Alfred. His wife preceded him, Nov. 25, 1875. He united with the Methodist church of Blue Point many years ago and had always lived a true Christian life and often assured those at his bedside of his readiness to go. His children and one sister, Sarah were at his bedside when the end came. His sister, Kate was compelled to return home because of ill health, another sister, whom had just departed for California could not be located. He leaves to mourn his departure three sisters, Mrs. G. W. Rhyne (s/b Rhine) of Creston, Mrs. W. H. Sheely (s/b Sheley) California, Miss Sarah Allen of Montezuma, three children, Mrs. John H. Harden of Montezuma, James and Alfred of Searsboro, thirteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren. Two grandchildren waiting on the other for grandfather to cross over. Funeral services were conducted by the pastor of Blue Point church, May 6, and laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
