Special to Times-Republican - Giman, May 17 -- Daniel McDaniel died yesterday at 10:30 a.m. He never rallied since receiving the fatal stroke. Last Wednesday while driving out on his farm in a hay rack, he dropped to the floor of the wagon, a victim of cerebral hemorrhage. Not returning, his tenant went out to look for him and found him there unconscious, about an hour, as was supposed, after the attack. Sometimes he would indicate by some faint sign that he understood what was going on around him, but he lay there during those long weary days and nights for over a week, helpless, and speechless. Daniel McDaniel was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, on April 24, 1841, and was therefore 65 years, and 21 days at his decease. He enlisted in the One Hundred and Twelfth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in the spring of 1862 for nine months and serving his time he re-enlisted in the Second Pennsylvania heavy artillery and served in that regiment until taken prisoner at Cold Harbor, June 2, 1864, and was imprisoned at Andersonville, and endured the horrors of that living hell for nearly nine months, being paroled on February 26, 1865. For many years he has celebrated his release and his friends and neighbors have crowded the opera house to do him honor, while with music and song and patriotic speeches from comrades assembled he told the story in his quaint and graphic way, the story of sufferings and the joy with which he beheld Old Glory when released from captivity, which told year after year never lost its interest until "Dan's Day" was looked forward to as one of the notable events of the year, and at the last anniversary, he seemed as vigorous as ever and enjoyed the meeting with comrades and the harmony of the occasion with more than his usual zest and spirit. He came to Buffalo Prairie, Illinois, in the fall of 1865, soon after his muster out and was married on June 7, 1867, to Elizabeth Winegard, with whom he had seven children, two of whom passed over before him, and the five remaining were at his bedside when he died. March 6, 1868, he came to Iowa and settled on a farm in this township, which he owned at the date of his death. His wife died about eight years ago, and about three years since he was married to Mrs. Annie Brown, who survives to mourn his loss. Added 03 Sept 2018
