Read More	Birth and death years are estimates plus or minus five years. Duncan McPherson, born in Scotland, believed to have settled into the United States when he was 23 years old. His wife Sarah was born in Virginia. They lived in North Carolina by 1800. Three children were Margaret, John Templeton and Randal, the youngest . It is believed that there were other children. Margaret was born in 1806; John in 1813 and Randal in 1815. These three children were Quakers, but it is not known if Duncan and Sarah were. Margaret married James Rawnsley on July 13, 1832 in Chatham County, North Carolina. John Templeton McPherson married Sabina Holiday in 1837 near the Cane Creek Meeting House, Orange (now Alamance) County, North Carolina. During the 1830's many of the Quakers were moving out of the slave states as they had arrived at a religious decision that slavery was wrong. A number of families left North Carolina and traveled the Wilderness Road into Indiana and other free states. The three known children of Duncan and Sarah left North Carolina and for a time settled in Morgan County, Indiana. It is believed that Duncan McPherson passed away between the time of the 1830 and 1840 census and that his widow Sarah made her home with one of her children in Indiana. Randal McPherson, a farmer like his brother John, married Hannah Hadley in May 1840 in Morgan County, Indiana. Hannah, a Quaker, was a cousin of Sabina Holiday. Sarah McPherson is believed to have died before the 1850 census and buried in Indiana. In the years before the Civil War again the slave issue caused some Quakers to move west, for others moving west was an opportunity for cheaper farm land. In time all three children with their growing families moved to Iowa by 1860. Margaret lost her husband James Rawnsley in 1869. Their son, Joseph John Rawnsley, would eventually move to Washington state. Margaret then married a widower Thomas Benbow, who had known the McPhersons when they lived in North Carolina. John Templeton McPherson, sold his holdings in Iowa and homesteaded in eastern Nebraska during the last years of his life. Accompanied by Cyrus McPherson, the oldest son of Randal and Hannah. Many members of the Quaker religion left the church during the Civil War to join the Union Army, rejecting the pacifist tenet of that faith. Cyrus was one of them who participated in the war to free the slaves.
