Biography: "MCSHANE--Daniel McShane, the first member of this family about whom we have definite information, was born in New Jersey. He was probably of Irish descent, and was one of the pioneers of Fayette county, Pennsylvania. While little is known of his family, it is stated that a brother, Robert McShane, was a soldier both in the revolution and in the war of 1812. The name of Daniel McShane's wife was probably Jane McDonald; they had a son Barnabas, of whom further. (II) Barnabas, son of Daniel McShane, was born June 13, 1800. For many years he was a highly respected resident of Fayette county. In the varied activities of his life he was for some years a teamster on the National Pike; he labored in the construction of the Pennsylvania railroad; he was also a farmer and a horse drover. His political principles were those of the Democratic party. He married Elizabeth Romyne, who was born in Loudoun county, Virginia. To this marriage there were born eleven children. (III) William, son and fifth child of Barnabas and Elizabeth (Romyne) McShane, was born on Georges creek, in Georges township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, February 7, 1829, and died September 18, 1898. He attended the township schools, and became a farmer. In 1852 he removed to Iowa, bought a large farm, and was extensively engaged in farming and dealing in stock until his return to Fayette county in 1864. He then settled in North Union township, purchasing a farm near West Leisenring in 1865; this farm he sold in 1881 and bought a farm in German township to which he removed in 1882 and which was his home for the rest of his life. Here he did general farming. This farm is beautifully situated, contains one hundred eighty-three acres, and is underlaid with two veins of coal, six and nine feet, beside containing numerous strata of limestone. For about twenty years he was associated with Captain A. J. Weltner in buying and selling stock. Mr. McShane was a leading and capable businessman, and known throughout the county as a successful trader. He was a Democrat. In North Union township he served as assessor, school director, justice of the peace and tax collector. He attended the Baptist church at Uniontown. He married, December 25, 1851, Elizabeth, daughter of Nathaniel Hurst, who died April 15, 1873. Children: Mary, married Hugh Cameron, of Iowa; Arrilla, unmarried, living at Uniontown; Anna, died November 28, 1911, married George Struble; William, married Anna Vail, of Iowa, and they have three children; Julia, married Edward Porter, of Uniontown; John, died in infancy; Martha Virginia, married William Grove; Porter, of whom further. (IV) Porter, son of William and Elizabeth (Hurst) McShane, was born in North Union township, April 6, 1873. He inherited his father's place, where he lived and cultivated the land until 1902; in that year he sold the old farm, buying the Balley farm of one hundred acres. In 1908 he sold this farm also, and he has since that time lived at McClellandtown, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, having retired from farming. He has bought and optioned extensive holdings of coal land. He is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons. In politics he is a Democrat, in religion a Baptist. Daniel McShane was serving in the New Jersey militia in Hunterdon County in 1793, and migrated to Fayette County, Pa., shortly after 1800. Following his wife’s death in Pennsylvania, he migrated in 1846 to Linn County, Iowa, with his son, John McShane.
