Woodward was born in Canada, March 19, 1835, and died in Atchison, Kansas, Aug. 22, 1906, aged 71 years, 5 months and 3 days. At the age of 23 he was married to Aurilla Sutton. Their home was in Michigan until 1871. At this date he moved to Jackson county, Kansas, and settled on a farm four miles south of Whiting, which was his home for several years. Twenty-four years ago he moved to Whiting where he has resided to the time of his death. To Brother and Sister Woodward were born four sons and two daughters. Two sons, one at 11 months and one at 29 years, preceded their father to the spirit land. Seventeen grandchildren survive him. Brother Woodward gave his heart to God in his 16th year. He united with the M.E. church and continued this relation until he came to Kansas, when he united with the United Brethren church. He lived an earnest and consistent Christian life and for a number of years he held a quarterly conference license to preach the Gospel. He was a very liberal supporter of the church at all times and when in health was a faithful attendant upon all the services of the church. Notwithstanding his great industry and careful diligence in temporal affairs he never allowed these interests to interfere with his devotional life. Sister Woodward bears testimony to his faithfulness as a husband and all the living sons and daughters speak in unqualified terms of his kindness and devotion as a father. He was a good neighbor and in every way a splendid example of good citizenship. His failing health for many years has made it necessary for him to cease his earlier activities of life. Fortunately for him his long illness was not a particularly painful period. The Recorder-Tribune, Holton, Kansas Thursday, August 30, 1906 _________________________ Mr. D. O. Woodward who has been a patient in a private hospital at Atchison died there Wednesday, and was brought here on the early train Thursday for burial. Funeral services were held from the U. B. church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Hoffman of Holton, after which interment was made in the country burying ground on the farm known as the old Medlock place. Mr. Woodward was one of the very early settlers in St. Creek Township, where he lived many years, accumulating a comfortable fortune farming and stock raising, where he was well and favorably known, when the weight of years began to burden him he moved to town where he had a comfortable home, living there until failing health rendered it necessary that he have better attention than was possible here, he was taken to the institution at Atchison where he died.
