Description	:	Daniel Richard (D.R.) Cox was a native of LaCrosse, FL born to Richard Asa Cox and Joseph Ann Elizabeth Lee, pioneers of Alachua County. He attended a business college in Kentucky and returned to Florida in the late 1890s where he taught school in Melrose, Micanopy and Bell, FL. Moving to Tallahassee, FL he was with the office of the state superintendent of public instruction, and later opened a drug store. Cox was a native of LaCrosse, FL born to Richard Asa Cox and Joseph Ann Elizabeth Lee, pioneers of Alachua County. He attended a business college in Kentucky and returned to Florida in the late 1890s where he taught school in Melrose, Micanopy and Bell, FL. Moving to Tallahassee, FL he was with the office of the state superintendent of public instruction, and later opened a drug store. In 1913 he sold his interests in Tallahassee and moved to South Florida where he owned an orange grove until 1917 when he moved to Gainesville, FL and purchased the Gainesville Furniture Company, later changing the name to Cox Furniture Company. In 1925 D.R.'s sons, J. O'Neal and Richard Asa "Gus" Cox, partnered with D.R. in the furniture business and he went on to buy the old farm and family home site in LaCrosse. From 1925 to 1935, though he resided in Gainesville, D.R. owned and operated a farm on the land. In 1935 D.R. returned to the furniture company where he was active until about 1945. An expansion of the business resulted in stores in Ocala, Lake City, Cross City, Tallahassee and Orlando. During his long and varied career, D.R. served as a state legislator, was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a deacon emeritus of the First Baptist Church, and was one of the earlier members of the Gainesville Rotary Club.
