Mar. 8, 1736/37 at Hingham "in ye Hundred & Fourth Year of his Age," that is Ætatis suæ 104. Although his gravestone says he died Mar. 8, 1736, that date was in the old English (Julian) calendar, written historically as Mar. 8, 1736/37 in the modern Gregorian calendar. Based on his recorded baptism, that he died Ætatis suæ 104 proves he died in the modern year of 1737. Throughout the early Hingham records Daniel, his father and siblings are primarily recorded under the surname of Stodder occasionally intermixed with the surname Stoddard. The memorialist has used the surname Stodder albeit the modern family name is Stoddard. On Dec. 27, 1665 at Hingham, Mass, Daniel m. Abigail Lane, dau. of Andrew Lane and his wife Triphena, latter affectionately Triphany. She was bapt. Aug. 16, 1646 at Hingham by Rev. Peter Hobart, the apparent 2nd oldest of three siblings bapt. that same day ["Mary, Abigail & Andrew Lane bapt." - Hobart's Journal]. Abigail d. Aug. 4, 1707 at Hingham, Æ 61 [Hingham VRs.] Daniel and Abigail had eleven identified children of record at Hingham, Mass., including two sets of twins. An additional child has been attached to the family in the genealogical literature absent documentation she was not otherwise a child of one of Daniel Stodder's brothers. • i. and ii. Two unnamed twin Stodder children, b. Oct 25, 1666 and d. the same day [Hobart's Journal.] • iii. Daniel Stodder, Jr., b. July 12, 1668 (bapt. July 25), d. prob. aft. May 7, 1691 [Dan Stodder's wife died, Hobart Journal], then disappears from all record at Hingham. He may have been a casualty of the Phipps April-May 1690 Expedition against the French either at Port Royal or Quebec in the King William's War; m. May 26, 1690 at Hingham, Margaret MacVarlo, dau. of Purde MacVarlow & Patence Russell, bapt. Dec. 20, 1669 at Hingham. She d. May 7, 1691 after giving birth to one child, dau. Margaret, bapt June 7, 1691. • iv. Abigail Stodder, b. Sept. 18, 1670 (bapt Oct. 30), d. childless Nov. 4, 1737 at Hingham, Mass., Æ 68; m. Nov. 10, 1713 at Hingham as his 2nd wife, Ephraim Marsh, Sr., s. of Thomas Marsh and Sarah Beal, bapt. July 1, 1655 at Hingham. He d. Apr. 21, 1715 at Hingham, Æ 60. Ephraim m. 1) Jan. 16, 1681/82 Elizabeth Lincoln and had four children, all of whom died as young adults without leaving apparent descendants. • v. Sarah Stodder, b. Dec 1, 1672 [Peter Hobart's Journal says Dec. 5 with no baptism record], claimed in the History of Hingham to have died unm. Apr. 27, 1756, Æ 84. • vi. Deborah Stodder, b. Apr. 15 1674 (bapt. Apr. 26). There is record confusion regarding this child vs. what is claimed by the History of Hingham and the NEHGS transcript of the Hingham VRs. The NEHGS transcribed two Deborahs, both daus. of Daniel Stodder, born two years apart. However, the original Hingham vital records for the second Deborah has a bold "D" overwritten over a "B" indicating she, "dau. of Daniel Stodder & Abigail his wife," d. Jan. 23 1675/6. Thus, Deborah Stodder who m. Jacob Beal in 1706, was supposedly six years older than her husband, and d. childless Dec 28, 1757, Æ 84, may not have been a child of Daniel and Abigail (Lane) Stodder. • vii. Josiah Stodder, b. Jul 6, 1678 (no baptism record), claimed by the History of Hingham to have d. unmarried May 17, 1749, Æ 72. • viii. Lydia Stodder, bapt. Oct. 31, 1680; d. an adolescent Apr. 10, 1694. • ix. Joseph Stodder, twin, b. May 5, 1683 (bapt. May 20), d. testate Nov. 13, 1777; m. an unidentified Mary or Mercy. Two children of the family. • x. Jaell Stodder, twin, b. May 5, 1683 (bapt. May 20), d. unmar. & testate June 16, 1769. • xi. Ruth Stodder, b. July 27, 1685 (no bapt. record); claimed by the History of Hingham to have d. unm. Apr. 13, 1751. The History of Hingham claims an additional child of the family was Rebecca, b. Nov. 24, 1675 (Hobart's Journal says "Rebeckah Stodder borne Jan. 29, 1675/6" with no stated parent or subsequent baptism.) She does not appear in the Hingham VRs as a child of the family, yet is claimed to be the Rebecca who m. ten year younger David Beal in 1710. The present writer would welcome knowledge of a primary document that proves Rebecca was Daniel's daughter. It should be noted that Savage's Dictionary (1860) is way-off regarding the structure of the immigrant John Stodder family of Hingham, Mass. Among other errors Savage stated that Daniel, Sr. was born in America when he was baptised in England almost 4 years prior to his parent's emigration; called Daniel, Sr. as David, called Daniel, Jr. as David, and gave Daniel, Jr. five children, four being his own siblings and did not include by name the only child Daniel, Jr. had at Hingham by his only known wife Margaret MacVarlo.
