Bandfield Suffered Stroke Death Occurred Sunday Morning at Home in Cedar Falls Cedar Falls, December 6 -- Daniel S. Bandfield, who had been a resident of Black Hawk County for many years, died at his home in this city Sunday morning at 6:10 following a paralytic stroke resulting from a rupture of the pulmonary artery, which occurred Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. On getting up from the table after dinner he found that he could only whisper. He told his wife that he would go out and trim some trees and see if he could not work off his hoarseness. She tried to dissuade him but he jokingly told her he was all right. After getting up in a tree twelve feet from the ground, he was suddenly taken worse and falling, wedged in a fork of the tree. As Mr. Bandfield was a man weighing over 200 pounds, it took four men to get him down. Some people, seeing them at work with the rope which they used in lifting him from the fork of the tree, drew the conclusion that Mr. Bandfield had tried to commit suicide by means of the rope and the report, entirely without foundation, was rapidly spread about. Mr. Bandfield was tenderly carried to the house, where he remained in an unconscious state until he passed away Sunday morning, all efforts to revive him being unavailing. Deceased was born in Chemung County, New York, June 18, 1861, being forty-eight years of age. He came to Iowa in 1865 and had lived in this county ever since. He was twice married, his first wife, Kate Kilpatrick, having passed away over twenty years ago. He is survived by his second wife, formerly Mary Padget of Mt. Vernon Township, to whom he was married sixteen years ago. Besides his wife, there are left to mourn one son by his first wife, Harry, of the Moore & Moore Lumber Company; and two sons and one daughter by the second marriage, May, Day and Frank, the latter aged 12. Irene and James, children of Harry, are the only grandchildren. His father survives at the age of 82 years, and for him he was caring at the time of his death. His mother passed away ten years ago on December 5, her son's death occurring on the anniversary of that event. He was the fifth in a family of six brothers and three sisters. One sister, Belle, died four years ago, and those who survive are C. E., A. J. and D. C. Bandfield of Waterloo, Eugene of Cedar Falls, George of Shell Rock, Mrs. Fred Henry and Mrs. Wilbert Loveland of Janesville. During his long residence in the county, he had made many friends and all will be grieved at his sudden summons. The funeral will be held from the home Tuesday morning at 9:30, conducted by Rev. J. E. Snowden of the Congregational church. The body will be laid to rest in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Published in The Courier (Waterloo, Iowa) on Monday, December 6, 1909.
