The Logansport Journal, of Sunday morning says: Carithers had been in Logansport but a short time, having come here from Otterbein, near Lafayette, Friday. It is believed his sweetheart lives there, and it is thought that a quarrel with her so affected him that he resolved to end his life. Saturday afternoon Carithers was first seen, in an apparently intoxicated condition, on Market street, and was taken to White's saloon. He was given a back room, and at his request was furnished writing material. Shortly after White again entered the room where the young man was writing and found him in agony. Dr. A. L. PALMER was summoned, and he at once saw the young man had taken morphine. Those who saw Carithers Saturday claim he had been despondent the entire day and at times would cry when asked what was troubling him. All efforts to get him out of his melancholy mood proved fruitless and late in the afternoon White and those who knew him resolved that the best thing to do would be to let him alone. This they did and the result was suicide. All efforts on the part of those who knew him to get an expression as to his sorrow from Carithers was of no avail, and the best answer any could get during the afternoon was that he was in trouble. It is believed, however, this trouble was over a love affair and no trouble with the law. He was a model young man, and it is not believed he was in any trouble with the law. Two letters were found in his possession and have been turned over to Coroner HETHERINGTON, of Cass county. One was unopened and bore the address of a young lady, but the coroner refuses to give out information of its contents and it is thought it contains an explanation for the deed. Another letter found on his person was that addressed to his parents, and in this he begs their forgiveness. He admits that he has done wrong, but he says he will meet them in heaven. In this letter no hint is given as to the cause for the suicide. ----- Published in The Rochester Sentinel Tuesday, April 12, 1904 Chas. CARITHERS, a brother of Daniel CARITHERS, went to Logansport Sunday and took charge of the remains bringing them here Monday on the noon train. They were at once taken to his parents' home near Mt. Olive where the funeral was conducted at 10 o'clock today by Rev. F. SWITZER.
