He passed on Sunday morning at 5 o'clock in Mercy Hospital, where he had been confined for two weeks. Public services will be held over the remains in Masonic Temple this evening at 8 o'clock under the direction of the local lodge. Tuesday morning, they will be escorted to the Northwestern depot by the Knights Templar and members of the Des Moines Consistory and placed in a special car. An escort composed of representatives from the different lodges to which he belonged will accompany them to Nashua where ritualistic services will be held by the Masonic body in Greenwood Cemetery. By the side of his mother and father, and not far from where he took his first degree in the order to which he was so attached, the interment will be made. Callender, a prominent Des Moines lawyer and one time a resident of this vicinity, died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines last Sunday and the remains were brought to Nashua on the 5:35 train, Tuesday and buried in Greenwood Cemetery by the side of his father and mother. He was born Feb. 26, 1841 near the town of Muhlenburg, Pa., and when about 15 years of age moved with his parents to Belvedere, Ill., and remained there for a year and a half. From there he moved to Bradford, and spent several years of his boyhood here. He received his common school education at Bradford and went to Grinnell to college. Later he studied law at Iowa City and made his way by teaching school. He was graduated from the State University and located in Des Moines. He had never married, being wedded to his profession and was one of the ablest attorneys of the state. He was also one of the most prominent lodge men of the state, being one of the few men of Iowa who had conferred upon them the highest rites of Masonry. He took his first degree in Masonry in Bradford July 29, 1869, joining Lodge No. 129. In 1870 he was made a Royal Arch Mason in Mount of Olives Chapter No. 60 at Nashua and has gradually risen in the order until he attained the highest rank in Masonry. He was also a prominent Elk. Public service was held over the remains in Masonic Temple Monday evening at 8 o'clock, and an escort composed of representatives of the different lodges to which he belonged, accompanied the remains to Nashua, coming in a special car. The Masonic Lodge of Nashua met the remains at the depot and escorted them to the cemetery where the Masonic ritualistic service was held. He was 62 years of age.
