She graduated from Creston High School in 1935 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she studied business administration and accounting. She married James W. Douglass on March 6, 1943, at Camp Crowder, Mo. Darleen lived and worked in Portland, Ore., in 1937, and worked as a secretary for the Civil Service in Camp Crowder, Mo., in 1943. She also worked for Consumer Public Power in Columbus as a secretary, Columbus Telephone and the Jeffries Accounting Firm as an accounting clerk. She and her husband retired from Nebraska Public Power District (formerly Consumer Public Power) in 1983 after she served more than six years as a micrographics operator. Darleen was a charter member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary, a past president of PTA and a Cub Scout, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and a member of the Altar Guild at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. Darleen was very proud to be involved in the publication of the book "The History of Platte County Nebraska" by Margaret Curry. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and playing canasta. Most of all, she loved spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Darleen is survived by her son, James W. Jr. (Rita) Douglass, of Columbus; daughter, Anne (James) McNeil, of Eagle, Colo.; daughter, Kathleen Douglass, of Lincoln; daughter, Margaret "Muffie" (John) Shaw, of Thermopolis, Wyo.; grandchildren, Matt (Christine) Douglass, of Columbus, Parker Douglass, of Columbus, Ashley Douglass, of Columbus, Lauren McNeil, of Eagle, Colo., Shayna (Jason) Wyasket, of Salt Lake City, Utah; great-grandchildren, Campbell Wyasket, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Cassandra Wyasket, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Phoebe Douglass, of Columbus, and Parker Douglass, of Columbus. Darleen was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Douglass Sr.; parents, George and Anna Michaelsen; brothers, Walter, Julius and Melvin Michaelsen; sisters, Emma Michaelsen, Elsie (Mrs. Louis) Henggeler; and grandson, Luke McNeil.
