Darlene Ann (Haines) Tappe was born on June 20, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Bennett and Evelyn (Chocholousek) Haines. Read More	Darlene Tappe, 73, of Platte, SD passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at her home. Darlene Ann (Haines) Tappe was born on June 20, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Bennett and Evelyn (Chocholousek) Haines. She moved with her family to Gregory, South Dakota, as a young child and was raised on her family farm near Dixon. She grew up a Gregory Gorilla, graduating from Gregory High School in 1959. From there she went on to receive a teaching degree from the University of South Dakota. On September 3, 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, Lee Tappe, in Gregory. She taught in Colome, Jefferson, and Elk Point before moving to Platte in 1967, where she helped her husband set up a law office. She spent the next thirty-five years working as a secretary in her husband’s law office and/or teaching English, literature, and business classes at Platte High School. When she became a Platte Panther, she enjoyed good naturedly fueling the Platte-Gregory rivalry by sharing Gorilla meat (licorice) with her students on their game days. Growing up she enjoyed riding her horses (Lady and Poco). Darlene spent many hours working in her yard, and she had a real gift for landscaping and decorating. She was a constant at her children and grandchildren’s activities. She made a point to be interested in and learn about the things they cared about. Darlene was instrumental in starting up Wings & Hope, seeing first hand the costs incurred by those going through cancer treatments. As a retired English teacher, she was called upon countless times to proofread resumes, scholarship applications, term papers, college papers, etc. She also enjoyed her part-time job at Main Street Variety. Darlene was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, in 2003; her father, Bennett, in 1966; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Myrtle Tappe. From the Mount Funeral Home
