Darlene was born July 21, 1926 in Guthrie County, Iowa to Charley and Helen (Sheeder) Benton. Darlene grew up on a farm in Guthrie County, attended country school and graduated from Guthrie Center High School completing the Normal Training Courses. Read More	Darlene Stringham, age 94, passed away on August 5, 2020 at the New Homestead, in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Darlene was born July 21, 1926 in Guthrie County, Iowa to Charley and Helen (Sheeder) Benton. Darlene grew up on a farm in Guthrie County, attended country school and graduated from Guthrie Center High School completing the Normal Training Courses. After graduation she taught at Wichita Township School #4 and Seeley Township School #5. In High School, Darlene fell in love with her “soul mate”, Jim Stringham and they married on December 23, 1944 in Missouri. They shared 62 wonderful years together before his death in 2006. Darlene was a devoted farm wife and homemaker. She was an avid gardener and an accomplished seamstress. She was a member of both the Yale United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. Later in life she served as President and Historian for the United Methodist Women’s group at the First United Methodist Church in Guthrie Center. In 1973, Darlene began working at Benton Fabric’s in Guthrie Center and later as a Clerk in the Recorder’s Office for 11 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother whose greatest joy was having her family gathered around her dining table. Friends were an important part of Darlene’s life, each summer over 50 years she reconnected with her five Round Robin friends (and their families) with whom she graduated high school. Playing cards with a group of 10 couples for 50 years was enjoyed. She continued her love for card playing, meeting weekly with three life long friends. Left to cherish her memory are, daughter, Sheila and husband, Dave, daughter, Shirley and husband, Harlan. Four grandchildren, Amy and husband, Rolf, Sarah and husband, Jordan, Katie and husband, Chris, and Kelsey and husband, Austin. Four great-grandchildren, Lily, Jack, Madelyn and Cole. Sister-in-law, Neva; and nieces and nephews. In death she rejoins parents, her husband, Jim, brother, A.C. Benton, sister, Doris Laughery, brother-in-law, Don Laughery, nephew, Tim Benton. The family would like to thank the compassionate care that our mom received from the New Homestead. Special thank you to Darlene’s friends and church community for all the support and care they offered throughout the years.
