Darlene Gwendolyn Hein, daughter of Herbert C. and Emma (Peskey) Hein, was born on May 29, 1922, on the family farm home in rural Cavour, Pearl Creek Township, Beadle County, South Dakota. Darlene attended elementary school at Oldenburg Country School, Pearl Creek Township. She was the third generation from her family to attend the school. In 1943 she graduated from the Chicago School of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois as a practical nurse. On March 22, 1945, Darlene married Chester A. Hewett at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Belle Prairie, rural Iroquois, SD. They had two children, a daughter Gaea, and a son Donley, and enjoyed 59 years together. Darlene was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She taught Sunday school for several years and served on the Altar Guild. She remained a member of the church until moving to Huron in 1972, at which time she joined Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she was a member of ALCW (American Lutheran Church Women). She currently was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Huron. Darlene was a 25-year member of "Our Hour Together" extension club, holding all offices. She was lifetime member of the Disabled American Veteran's Auxiliary (DAV). Darlene and Chester farmed for 33 years. She was an instrumental partner in their farm and egg business. Before her marriage Darlene worked as a nurse. She began her career as a nurse for Dr. John S. Tschetter at the Samaritan Hospital in Huron. Later she switched to private duty nursing for Dr. Bates in the Lake Preston area, Dr. Burnam in the Carthage area, and Dr. Paul Tschetter in the De Smet area. In 1972 she worked for a short time at St. John's Hospital in Huron as a ward clerk. For a number of years Darlene was an Avon sales representative winning many awards for her work. In the seventies she worked as a hostess at the Plains Dining Room in Huron. Also, for a number of years she volunteered three days a week at Helping Hands Thrift Store. She was a member of the Low Vision Support Group at the Huron Senior Center. Upon retiring she learned to oil paint winning several ribbons and awards at both county and state fairs as well as craft shows. Darlene enjoyed painting for other people and always took pride in taking special orders. She passed on her talent for painting by teaching oil painting classes for ten years in Arizona. In Huron she continued to share her love of painting with others by teaching painting classes at the Corner Stone Learning Center. She also taught her granddaughter, Sarah, and great-granddaughters Alexandra and Hannah, how to paint. In recent years Darlene spent countless hours sewing and tying baby quilts and sewing hundreds of diapers for babies in Mexico. She went on two church mission trips to Mexico at age 86 and 87 to personally assist in delivering the baby quilts. Darlene and Chester enjoyed extensive travels to Hawaii, Europe, England, Old Mexico, across Canada from Vancouver, BC to Nova Scotia, and visited every state in the lower United States. They were members of the Good Sam Camping Club for a number of years. For 27 years, they wintered in Apache Junction, Arizona. Darlene is survived by a daughter, Gaea Blue (Gary) of Wessington Springs, SD; and a son, Donley Hewett of Hermosa, SD; seven grandchildren, Paul Blue (Jennifer) of Colorado Springs, CO, Amy Blue of Las Vegas, NV, Rebecca Blue of Washington, DC, Sarah Blue of Huron, SD, Jacob Hewett (Karyne) of Youngsville, LA, Joshua Hewett (Amanda) of Custer, SD, and Luke Hewett (Seanna) of Hermosa, SD; seven great-grandchildren plus one great-grandchild soon to be born; a sister, LaVonne Metter (Raymond) of Huron; a sister-in-law LaVerne Hein of Huron; and many nieces and nephews, as well as many great-nieces and nephews.
