She attended Birklid School near Kathryn, ND before going to school in Ft. Ransom. On October 19, 1951, Darlene married Edwin Bjerke in Webster, SD. They made their home near Kathryn and in 1953, moved to Valley City, ND. She worked as a receptionist in Dr. Neil McDonald’s office. In 1992, they moved to Ft. Read More	Provided by Stacie Hansen-Leier: Darlene Mae Sorby was born on September 20, 1934 at Ft. Ransom, ND, the daughter of Arthur and Emma (Gyldenvand) Sorby. She attended Birklid School near Kathryn, ND before going to school in Ft. Ransom. On October 19, 1951, Darlene married Edwin Bjerke in Webster, SD. They made their home near Kathryn and in 1953, moved to Valley City, ND. She worked as a receptionist in Dr. Neil McDonald’s office. In 1992, they moved to Ft. Ransom where they painted numerous buildings and she cooked at the Senior Citizens Center. They moved back to Valley City in 2000. Darlene was an excellent cook. She especially liked making Norwegian foods. Entertaining guests for coffee and goodies was something she enjoyed. Her hobbies also included embroidery and doing crossword and word search puzzles. She was a Den Mother for Cub Scouts. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Valley City and Preston Lutheran Church rural Kathryn. Darlene taught Sunday School for many years and was active in Ladies Aid. She belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and was formerly a member of the KP Auxiliary. Darlene died August 15, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Valley City. She is survived by her husband, Edwin of Valley City; son, Gene (Nancy) Bjerke of Valley City; grandchildren, Anthony (Michelle) Bjerke, Emily (Dillon) Barclay, Lena (Steve) Ternes, and Jarred Bjerke; a great grandson, Jonathan Ternes; a brother, Kermit (Arlys) Sorby of Nome, ND; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Sorby of Ft. Ransom; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Bjerke; and brother, Curtis Sorby.
