Description	:	Darlene M. Utterback, 79, of Mapleton, Iowa, formerly of Castana, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. Darlene Margaret was born May 11, 1934, in rural Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Burl and Diantha (Petty) Seaton. She grew up in the Castana area and graduated from Castana Community High School in 1952. Utterback, 79, of Mapleton, Iowa, formerly of Castana, Iowa, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. Darlene Margaret was born May 11, 1934, in rural Castana, Iowa, the daughter of Burl and Diantha (Petty) Seaton. She grew up in the Castana area and graduated from Castana Community High School in 1952. When she was 16 years old, she spent the summer between her sophomore and junior years working as a nurse's aide at the Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She continued to do this every summer until graduation. After graduation, Darlene attended nursing school at the Immanuel Lutheran Hospital in Omaha. Six months before her graduation, she was united in marriage to Gayland Utterback on November 23, 1957 in Onawa. The couple lived in Omaha for one year, where she continued working for the hospital. In 1958, the couple moved back to the Castana area where they lived just north of her parents. Darlene worked as a nurse's aide for Opal Bennett at Moss Nursing Home in Turin, Iowa and for Max and Theresa Nicholisan at the nursing home in Onawa. She worked seven days a week for many years. She then worked in the cafeteria at the school in Castana for 22 years, from 1974-1996, when she retired as head cook. Darlene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Grimsley Thayer Post #502 of Castana and the American Legion Auxiliary Loren Hollister Post #496 of Mapleton. She enjoyed cooking; baking; her grandchildren; watching baseball, especially the White Sox; puzzle books; going to coffee; and being with her friends. Survivors include a daughter, Gaylene (Ray) Rosburg of Mapleton, IA; a son, Kevin Utterback of Mapleton, IA; six grandchildren, Brandon (Michelle) Rosburg of Denver, IA, Brianna (Mike) Britson of St. Paul, MN, Maggie Rosburg of Mapleton, IA, Brett Utterback of Casper, WY, Bryce Utterback of Fort Dodge, IA, and Sara Utterback of Mapleton, IA; one great-granddaughter, Breanna Lee; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Utterback; two nephews, Randylee and Rod Utterback, both of Castana, IA; and a niece, Ralinda Ward of Castana, IA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gayland; her parents; her mother and father-in-law, Freeland and Henrietta Utterback; and a brother-in-law, Lee Utterback.
