He was born on April 11, 1924 to William and Jemima (Stutzman) Burkey on the family farm southwest of Milford, Nebraska where he lived until his death. He was born on April 11, 1924 to William and Jemima (Stutzman) Burkey on the family farm southwest of Milford, Nebraska where he lived until his death. Darold was the sixth of eight children and as a young boy, he attended country school near his family home. He accepted Christ as his personal savior at the West Fairview Mennonite Church and later became a member of Bellwood Mennonite Church on December 15, 1996. After Pearl Harbor was bombed, Darold enlisted; however due to a medical rejection, he assisted his country by loading and making bombs at the Mead, Nebraska plant. As a young man he helped his father farm and at a church youth party hosted by his sister, Joyce, he met the love of his life, Imogene Roth, and they were united in marriage on May 10, 1951 at East Fairview Mennonite Church and to this union five children were born, Char, Debbie, Kevin, Ed, and Carrie. Together they made their home on the "homeplace", where Darold farmed and raised corn, hogs, and cattle. He was an avid reader of many farm journals, magazines, and other books. He was a responsible, caring and compassionate man and always put others before himself. Darold did everything he could for his children and grandchildren and as a young man, if he was working for others, he would quit and go home to help his father, then go find another job, again. Darold's favorite food was peanut butter cookies, but he loved to garden, planting sweet corn and other vegetables so that he could share with others. Darold's faith was very important and he always said "God was in his heart", especially with the troubles he dealt with at the time they lost their personal belongings and family mementos in a fire that destroyed their home. He is survived by his wife, Imogene, Milford, children and spouses, Char and Lonnie Roth, Lincoln, Debbie and David Roth, Cairo, Kevin and Kelli Burkey, Dorchester, Ed and Hang Burkey, Milford, Carrie and Erik Borgmeyer, Fremont, 12 grandchildren, brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne Burkey, Milton and Helen Burkey, all of Lincoln, sisters and brothers-in-law, Viola Schlegel, Bernice and Harlan Hershberger, all of Milford, and Joyce and Lyle Gamble, Seward, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Robert, and a sister, Florence Hershberger. A Funeral Service was held on Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Bellwood Mennonite Church, with Rev. Marlin Kym officiating. Interment was in Milford Mennonite Cemetery.
