Carmel Cem., Florien, Sabine, Louisiana Father: John Calvin Behan b: 15 DEC 1897 in Louisiana Mother: Lena Murray b: 1 JAN 1911 in Sabine Parish, Louisiana =========== Sabine Index, Many, La., Oct 21, 1976 Darold Wayne Behan, 38, died at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 16, as the result of a gunshot wound. According to the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Dept., the shooting occurred approximately seven miles east of Many, on the Middle Creek Road. Behan, his brother-in-law, Ernest Huff, 36, and James Bland, approximately 30, all of the Middle Creek community, were involved in an argument on the darkened dirt road, when the shooting occurred. According to Sheriff George R. Cook, Behan blocked the road leading toward Many with his Chevrolet pick-up. Several of his children were in the camper. Huff, who was driving a Ford, was traveling behind Behan. Bland was a passenger in the Huff vehicle. When Behan blocked the road, Huff and Bland got out of their vehicle, and continued the argument with Behan. According to the Sheriff's Dept. Huff and Bland were allegedly trying to reason with Behan. Behan allegedly pulled his picket knife out and cut Bland across the stomach, and the back of the leg. Bland began running up the road. Behan reportedly started after Huff, and Huff grabbed his .12 gauge shotgun. According to Sheriff Cook, Huff allegedly warned Behan to stop. Behan didn't, and Huff fired one shot of squirrel shot, killing Behan instantly. Following the shooting, Huff went to a nearby home, and had the Sheriff's Dept. notified. According to deputies, Huff was waiting for them at the scene. Bland was transported to Fraser Hospital for emergency treatment. His wounds required a number of stitches. Huff is presently lodged in the Sabine Parish Jail, pending further investigation. Second degree murder charges have been filed. Behan is survived by his widow, Mable Behan; five sons, Dwain Behan, and Stevie Behan, both of Orange, Tex., Doyle Behan, Donald Behan, and John Behan, all of Many; three daughters, Carolyn Boutte of Lafayette, and Peggy, and Belinda Behan, both of Many; his father, John Behan of Robeline; four brothers, Austin Behan, and Autrey Behan, both of Many, Kenneth Behan of Shreveport, and Bobby Behan of Robeline; one sister, Mrs. Eunice Oxley of Sulphur; and one grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Warren Meadows Funeral Home Chapel, Monday, Oct. 18, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Johnny Rhodes officiated. Burial was in the Mt.
