Description	:	Darrel D. Meyer, 84 of Bertrand died Monday, January 20, 2014, at the Bertrand Nursing Home in Bertrand. Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday at the Hope Lutheran Church of Smithfield, NE (located northwest of Bertrand.) The Rev. Tim Glendening will officiate. Private family interment will be held prior to service time at the Hope Lutheran Church Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard in conjunction with the American Legion Post of Bertrand.. O'Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral Home in Kearney is in charge of arrangements. Darrel was born October 29, 1929 on the family farm north of Bertrand to Louie (Lou) W. and Mary Aurel (Scott) Meyer. He was baptized at Hope Lutheran on December 1, 1929, later being confirmed at Hope Lutheran on June 29, 1942. He attended District #45 in Gosper County and graduated from Bertrand High School in 1946. He entered the Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1955 as Air Man First Class. He was married to Carol Werner of Alpena, MI on January 23, 1954. Carol died of cancer on October 7, 1980. He was a lifetime farmer. He was later married to Betty Griffith on December 19, 1981 at Hope Lutheran. They made their home near Bertrand retiring from farming in 2000. He was a lifetime and active member of the church he loved, Hope Lutheran Church, serving on the Church Council, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday and Vacation Bible School Teacher, and choir member. He held several offices in the Central Church District. Pastimes included singing, trapshooting, golf, baseball, ice cream, dark chocolate candy, his chocolate labs and traveling, especially long car trips. He enjoyed singing with the 1733 Barbershop Chorus for 28 years. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Bertrand, children, Mary Jo Breece and her husband, Kevin and their son, Nolan of Holdrege, NE, Kathan Meyer and her husband, Chris Alger and their children, Evan, Max and Blythe of Westminster, CO, Arva Carlson and her husband, David and their children, Anna, Jenna, Maria and Sofia of Wilbraham, MA, Gary Griffith and his wife, Helen Montoya and their children, Jamaica Peeples, her husband, James and their son, Malachi, Maggie Montoya, Jordon Griffith, Spencer Montoya and Taylor Griffith of Lincoln, NE, two sisters, May Lou Nelson of Colorado Springs, CO, Janice Bachmann and her husband, Stuart of Bertrand, NE, two sister-in-laws, Merna Smith of Holdrege, NE and Verla Matuschka and her husband, Ernie of Sun Lakes, AZ, brother-in-laws, Ronald Werner, Alpena, MI, William Werner, Wisconsin, and Bob Kelly of Omaha, NE, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol, parents, two sisters, Audrey Meyer and Charlene Kelly, infant daughters, Jill and Susan, infant son, Dean and infant grandson, Peyton.
