Description	:	Darrel Earl Miller, 87, passed away July 24, 2017, at Hays Medical Center from complications following a heart attack. He was born May 21, 1930, on a family farm north of Lebanon, Kan., to Earl Lewis Miller and Sarah (Sadie) Carpenter Miller. Darrel graduated from Lebanon High School in 1947. He was born May 21, 1930, on a family farm north of Lebanon, Kan., to Earl Lewis Miller and Sarah (Sadie) Carpenter Miller. Darrel graduated from Lebanon High School in 1947. He was proud to attend his 70th class reunion this past May. Darrel married Ruth DeBey on Dec. 16, 1950, at the Methodist parsonage in Downs. They were married for 62 years. Three children were born to this union: Randy, Michelle and Lara. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in February 1951, serving from 1951 to 1953. Although he took combat training, he was assigned to the staff of the armed service’s daily newspaper, The Stars and Stripes, in Darmstadt, Germany. After his military service, he enrolled at Kansas State University under the G.I. Bill and studied journalism. He worked on the staff of the K-State Collegian as a reporter, feature editor, sports editor, copy editor, assistant editor and editor, winning All-America honors as editor. He operated the Downs News and Times with his wife, Ruth, from 1958 to 1968 and bought the Lebanon Times, his hometown newspaper, in 1967. From 1968 to 1972, he leased both newspapers to another newspaperman while he joined the Oklahoma State University news bureau. At the same time, he and Ruth also operated the nearby Perkins Journal. They returned to Downs in 1972 and added the Smith County Pioneer in 1973, which he edited and published for the next 34 years while Ruth edited the other newspapers. They also bought the Cawker City Ledger in 1979. He served on the board of the Kansas Press Association and later rejoined the board as Northwest District director. He served as KPA president in 2002-03 and received the Clyde M. Reed Jr. Master Editor Award in 2004. He was inducted into the KPA Hall of Fame in 2009. In recent years, he was a regular columnist for the Hays Daily News. He was an avid gardener, helped restore the Downs depot, and researched and published several local history books. He and Ruth were inducted into the Osborne County Hall of Fame in 2005. Survivors include: his three children, Randy Miller (Julie) of Bethesda, Md., Michelle Doherty (Peter) of Rockville, Md., and Lara Ketter (John) of Tipton; grandchildren, Matthew Miller, Christian Miller, Kyle Doherty, Drew Doherty, Jenna Ketter, Alex Ketter and Max Ketter. Darrel was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, in 2013; parents, Earl and Sadie Miller; and an infant sister, Joyce Arlene. Salina Journal
