Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua, with grandsons Joshua Weigand, Jason Weigand, Chase Pitzer, Sam Blum, Peter Watters and Matthew Pitzer serving as pallbearers. Darrell Dale Weigand was born April 4, 1927, in Wendell, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Anna (Menken) Weigand. In 1928, the family moved to Iowa. Darrell received his education in rural country schools, and was a graduate of the Nashua high school class of 1944. He continued his education at Wartburg college. Darrell entered the U.S. Army in February of 1946. He was a member of the 3024th QM Salvage Collection Company. His unit was based in Korea, and served between World War II and the Korean War. He received the WW II Victory Medal as well as the Army of Occupation medal – Japan. On May 15, 1949, Darrell was united in marriage to Jean Wagner at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua. To this union, five children were born. From 1949-1962, Darrell owned and operated the Nashua DX Station with his father. In 1961, the couple moved their family to an acreage, where he farmed and worked part-time at the Nashua Mill. In 1972, the family moved from the acreage to town. Darrell was employed at the Nashua Fertilizer Plant until his retirement in 1986. Darrell and Jean worked side by side for most of their married lives, including work on the farm and also at the fertilizer plant. Darrell was an avid woodworker. He enjoyed doing projects for his family, friends, and for the church. He was very active in the church, serving on the church council as treasurer and president. He also co-chaired the building committee that built the new St. John Lutheran Church in 1962, which is the current building that is in use today. He also served on the Nashua school board as treasurer, and was a secretary on the Big Four fair board. He was a volunteer fireman with the Nashua Fire Department for 23 years, and a member of the Nashua VFW post #6792. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean; two sons, Gregory (Marleen) Weigand of Stanwood, WA, Wayne (Rhonda) Weigand of Little Elm, TX; three daughters, Marvlyn (Thomas) Watters of Nashua, Laura (Steve) Blum of Nashua, and Mary (Kevin) Pitzer of Fargo, ND; fifteen grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Eleanor Wright and one sister in infancy; and his granddaughter, Tara Weigand. Hugeback Funeral Home www.hugebackfuneralhome.com
