Nelson who died suddenly on arrival at Canton- Inwood Hospital on Tuesday evening, June 16, 2009, the result of a heart attack. Darrell Francis Nelson was born August 9, 1948 in Sioux Falls, the son of Morris and Marie (VanGerpen) Nelson. He grew up in Lennox and graduated from Lennox High School in 1966. He had made his home with his aunt and uncle, Chris and Clay Rumper in Lennox. On June 6, 1969 he was united in marriage to Ardis Dannen at Germantown Church, rural Chancellor. They lived in Lennox and moved to Canton in 1973 where they had since made their home. Darrell was in law enforcement most of his life, first with the Canton Police Department and then was a deputy sheriff in Lincoln County for 15 years. In 1994 he was elected Lincoln County Sheriff until his retirement. He was a bus driver for the Canton School District from 1991 to the present time. Darrell was baptized and confirmed at First English Lutheran Church in Lennox. He had served as an E.M.T. with the Canton-Inwood Ambulance Assoc. for over 20 years. He enjoyed camping and was an avid Chicago Bears fan. He was preceded in death by his mother on May 1, 1965; his father on June 8, 1973 and his brother, Merle Nelson, on May 4, 2003. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Ardis; four children and their spouses: Amy and Mike Kjenstad of Astoria, Darren Nelson of Sioux Falls, Angela and Mike Koedam of Rock Valley, Iowa and Andrea and Mark Zelasko of Sioux Falls; nine grandchildren; his motherin- law: Winifred Dannen of Lennox; brothers and sisters-in law: Ron and Carol Dannen of Sioux Falls and Paul and Kris Dannen of Ottumwa, IA.
