On January 13, 1950, he was born at Belle Plaine, the son of Ernest John and Laverna Brunssen Cohrt. Cohrt, 62, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Emergency Room at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. On January 13, 1950, he was born at Belle Plaine, the son of Ernest John and Laverna Brunssen Cohrt. He attended school in the Benton Community School District, and then served his country in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam. On April 16, 1971, Darwin was united in marriage to Linda Blackwell at Keystone, Iowa. They moved to Oskaloosa frorm Keystone in 1971, and Dar worked at Clow Valve Company in Oskaloosa for 41 years, retiring in July, 2012. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, and had been a deacon and served on various committees whithin the church. He was also a member of the American Legion, Harry L. Anderson Post 34. His grandchildren were the 'apple of his eye'! Dar enjoyed reading; playing computer games, and his early morning coffee group at McDonald's. He was an avid golfer. he loved traveling with Linda; their cruise to Alaska and many trips to the Caribbean were a few of their favorite trips. His family includes his wife, Linda of Oskaloosa; a son and his wife: Doug and Jennifer Cohrt of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren: Caleb and Leah Cohrt; a brother: Robert Cohrt of Newhall, Iowa; a sister: DeLores Adams of Palo, Iowa; his step mother in law: Dorothy Blackwell of Bloomfield; and Linds's brother and sisters: Robert "Bob" Blackwell of Ottumwa, Sandy McCarthy, Overland Park, Kansas; Joan Hicks of Henderson, Nevada, and Nancy(Rollie)Cantrell of Hiawatha, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. Darwin was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Eric John Cohrt; and two brothers in infancy. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 10:30 am in the First Christian Church, Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery at Oskaloosa with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Friday after 10 am, and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Friday from 5-7 pm to greet friends and relatives. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
