Sam was born September 3, 1928, in Gilman, IA, to Verle and Blanch (Russie) Newton. He attended Marshalltown Schools. "Sam" Newton, 86, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2015, at the Iowa Veterans Home, in Marshalltown. Sam was born September 3, 1928, in Gilman, IA, to Verle and Blanch (Russie) Newton. He attended Marshalltown Schools. Sam enlisted in the United States Navy on June 23, 1947, and was honorably discharged. He worked for R.D. Stewart Construction as a finish carpenter, retiring in 1992. Sam was married to Bonnie Gerton in September 1952, and they had one son, Dennis. He was married to Helen Snyder on February 8, 1964, and had a son, Tim. On December 18th, 1971, Sam married Joan Cathcart; she preceded in him in death (December 3, 1990). Sam enjoyed golfing, bowling and dancing. But most of all, he enjoyed singing. Most days he could be found listening to country music and singing along with it. Sam also sang with the Marshalltown Men's Chorus. He enjoyed working with his hands and did everything from woodworking and leather crafts to putting puzzles together. Sam loved to travel and took many trips over the course of his life; California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado and North Carolina were some of the places he visited. Sam wasn't just a carpenter, he was a craftsman, and he worked on many notable places in Marshalltown, including big remodels at the Court House, Fisher Controls, many local schools and private homes, along with the Susie Sower House and Taylor #4 Country School. Sam is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joan. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 24, 2015, at Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W. Main St., Marshalltown. Pastor Greg Ellcey will officiate the services. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m., until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 23, 2015, at the funeral home.
