Description	:	WWII Veteran Daryl N. Port, 82, of Akron, Iowa, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2007 at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron, Iowa with Reverend Laurice Streyffeler officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Akron with military rites provided by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron, Iowa. Daryl Norman Port was born December 10, 1924 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Alva and Lucetta (Morehead) Port. He attended country school and later Akron School. He entered the United States Army on January 8, 1945. He served his country during the end of WWII and the beginning of Korean conflict as a Technician Corporal. He was stationed on the Philippine Islands and later in Korea. For his service to his country, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater ribbon, Philippine Liberation ribbon, WWII Victory medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and Good Conduct medal. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1946. He was united in marriage to Joyce Neunaber on April 20, 1947 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Together they are the parents of 3 children: Gordon, Gary, and Gail. Early in his life, he farmed near Akron and owned and operated a Trucking business. Later, he worked for Dirk's Hardware in Akron for over 12 years. He also worked at Westfield Elevator and later Nelson Hatchery and Feed Mill in Akron. He also did janitorial work and drove school bus for the Akron-Westfield school district. He retired in January 1, 1989. Following his retirement, Daryl enjoyed mowing lawns in Akron on his John Deere Tractor. Joyce passed away January 23, 2006. Daryl was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron where he served as an usher. He was an over 60-year member of the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron where he was Past Commander. He enjoyed bowling and playing pinochle. He enjoyed having coffee "Down Under" and at Akron Lanes. He enjoyed having lunch at Jo's Café in Akron. But most of all, he enjoyed mowing lawns with his John Deere tractor. He and Joyce loved their family. They supported their children and grandchildren with all their activities. Daryl will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his children: Gordon Port and his wife Nancy of Nevada, IA, Gary Port of Peoria, AZ, and Gail Port of Conifer, CO; 3 grandchildren: Casey Port of Urbandale, IA, Derek Port and his wife Keri of Eagen, MN, and Aaron Port and his fiancé Lynne Homan of Austin, MN; a brother: Dennis Port of Akron, Iowa; 2 brothers-in-law: Donald Neunaber and his wife Esther of Akron, IA, and Marvin Neunaber of Sioux Falls, SD; and 2 nieces, 2 nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce; and a sister-in-law: Lori Neunaber. Memorials can be made in Daryl's name to Wesley United Methodist Church or Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron.
