HOFFERBER CHILDREN—GENEVA, NEB., OCT. 19.—The 8 year old daughter of Jacob HOfferber, living west of the railroad tracks, attempted to kindle a fire with kerosene, resulting in the probable loss of two lives. The oil in the can exploded, setting fire to the child’s clothing and also to that of a little year old girl and a boy of 11, who were in the room. The latter at once rushed out giving the alarm. The mother was working some distance from the house at the time. The two girls were terribly burned and the elder did not survive the night. The boy’s burns are also severe, and he is not expected to recover. The elder girl might have escaped almost without injury, but turned back after leaving the house to rescue her sister. She managed to save the terrified child, but herself received fatal injuries. The Fillmore County News (Exeter) October 21st, 1899 page 2. ALSO: A most shocking accident occurred in the west part of town Monday evening, the result of which was the death of two small children and the possibility of a third child dying also. The facts, as nearly as we have been able to ascertain, are about as follows: The family which by the way is named Hofferber, consists of father, mother and four children. The father and mother were in the field some distance away pulling beets, leaving the children at home. About 6 o’clock in the evening they were trying to kindle a fire and taking a can of kerosene, poured some oil into the stove on a bed of hot coals. Instantly there was an explosion and the burning oil flew all over the room enveloping the three children who happened to be there at the time. Several neighbors who chanced to hear the explosion and see the blaze ran to their assistance and soon extinguished the fire in the house, but the clothing of the children had caught fire and they were so badly burned that a little girl about six years of age died that night and the baby, one year old, died the following evening. At latest reports the other injured child is improving and will probably recover. The Geneva Gazette October 20th, 1899 page 5.
