Marshall was born April 4, 1856, on a farm near Churches Mills, New York, the third of a family of six children born to his parents, Jacob Marshall and wife, Mary Ann (nee) Hale. At the age of 12 he moved with his parents to a farm near Manito, Illinois, and after completing his common school education worked in a flour mill for 13 years. Marshall was born April 4, 1856, on a farm near Churches Mills, New York, the third of a family of six children born to his parents, Jacob Marshall and wife, Mary Ann (nee) Hale. At the age of 12 he moved with his parents to a farm near Manito, Illinois, and after completing his common school education worked in a flour mill for 13 years. On October 4, 1884, at the age of 27, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Ruth of Green Valley, Illinois. They commenced housekeeping in Delavan, and while here he became a member of the Methodist Church. They continued to farm in the vicinity of Delavan and San Jose, Illinois, for some 20 years. In the spring of 1915, Mr. Marshall and his family moved to Hancock County, Iowa, and have lived in this community for the past 24 years. "Dad" Marshall, as he was called by his friends, had a jolly disposition and was a pleasant man to work with, and for this he will be missed. On Wednesday morning he suffered a stroke, and on Saturday evening, February 4, 1939, his earthly career ended. He reached the age of 82 years and 10 months, and leaves besides his wife: one daughter, Mrs. Harnes Cunningham of San Jose, Illinois; three sons, Clyde, Herbert and Gilman all of Klemme, Iowa; five grand children; three great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Caroline Munyon of Momence, Illinois; one brother, Frank Marshall of Forest City, Illinois; and many more distant relatives and friends.
